- Provide leadership and coordination within Trans Care BC with respect to the participation of physicians, in the evaluation of the efficiency, quality and delivery of services, including without limiting the foregoing, participating in medical audits, peer and interdisciplinary reviews, and incident report reviews.
- In conjunction with the Provincial Program Director, take a lead role in engagement with Health Authorities around service delivery and program governance.
- Oversees human resource management of physicians including appraisals, resolving conflicts, management of physician contracts.
- The PMD is the primary clinical strategic advisor to the PD and a member of the Trans Care BC leadership team – informing the development and execution of Trans Care BC strategies and annual plans. In this role, the PMD will also be responsible to provide active input into annual resource allocation decisions.
- Serves as the primary medical representative for the Trans Care BC Program for interactions, including, but not limited to, governance tables, with the Ministry of Health related to program planning, Surgical Business Case, quality care issues and MSP.
- The PMD will assist with clinical guideline development and the curation of practice guidance. The PMD will support dissemination ensuring the work reflects best and wise practices and translates to related clinical pathways. Focused on creating equitable access for clients to gender-affirming care, using available evidence, promising and wise practices, this leader will be skilled at broad systems thinking and effective change management work with health professionals.
- Serves as the lead for engagement with the physician community and governing bodies such as the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons, Divisions of Family practice, related to the integration of Trans Care guidelines within Primary Care.
- As a member of the Trans Care BC Leadership Team, the PMD will provide support to the PD and Program Manager for key operational meetings, initiatives and activities spanning the full Trans Care BC scope.
- The PMD will actively participate in the development of a Provincial Tiers of Service Framework and will support the leadership team in addressing and responding to emerging operational issues.
- The PMD participates in management discussions and decisions with the Provincial Program Director including, health human resource planning and the development, implementation and evaluation of patient/client programs and services.
- The PMD will be the leader responsible for managing and overseeing physician contracts and the reappointment cycle.
- The PMD will act as medical spokesperson for Trans Care BC and support the PD where medical expertise is required.
- In this role the PMD may be asked to provide input toward and/or review public communications related to trans healthcare, including quality of care, patient health outcomes and health policy within BC.
- Participate in media calls or interviews on topics related to the mandate and operations of Trans Care BC.
- Program Advisory Group: Required to plan (inform and advise on agendadevelopment) and co-chair the regular meetings.
- Clinical Advisory Group: Requiredtoplan (inform and advise on agendadevelopment) and co-chair the regular meetings.

Trans Care BC is a Provincial Clinical Program of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) that sets direction and provides leadership for trans health services across BC. Trans Care BC aims to ensure Two-Spirit, transgender and gender diverse people of all ages get the care they need when and where they need it. Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Clinical Policy, Planning and Partnership, the Provincial Medical Director (PMD) assumes joint accountability for the attainment of the strategic objectives and operational plans of the Trans Care BC program. The PMD maintains professional standards and works to enhance services for transgender community members around the province of B.C.
The PMD provides strategic and clinical leadership to Trans Care BC with broad oversight across the portfolio, including focus on health system quality, research, and education and partnership strategies. In collaboration with the Provincial Director and the Trans Care BC leadership team, responsibilities include fostering strategic partnerships with clinical, operational and academic leaders; assisting in the development of robust governance structures and prioritization frameworks; and advancing the Tiers of Service model to improve the health and wellbeing of Two-Spirit, trans and gender diverse people.
This role will support increased access to medically necessary treatments such as hormone replacement therapies and surgical access and care planning; innovation to minimize wait times for all forms of transgender health care; leading policy and clinical practice changes; involvement in program/service evaluation and quality improvement, and championing strategies which will increase knowledge, skills, and experience of multi-disciplinary clinicians in providing care to the transgender population.
This physician leader will effectively collaborate with physician colleagues, Doctors of BC, health authorities, community groups and other key partners to inspire a shared vision in the development of a comprehensive provincial network of person and family-centered services of transgender health care for British Columbians throughout their lives.
This position requires a medical degree and membership in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC with relevant post-graduate transgender care training. This will be supplemented by progressive leadership experience and demonstrated ability to positively influence physician colleagues and other key stakeholders and foster a collaborative team approach to decision making.

The ideal candidate has the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects, and has the proven ability to negotiate and mediate resolutions to complex situations. Exceptional communication, interpersonal and public relations skills coupled with the ability to interact tactfully and effectively with staff at all organizational levels both internally and externally is essential. The successful candidate will have the ability to establish courses of action for self and others that are results oriented. It is critical that the individual is able to relate effectively to a variety of people from diverse backgrounds. Advanced medical practice experience and/or knowledge of working with trans, gender diverse and non-binary people is required for this position. Experience with community development and 2SLGBT2QIA+ communities is considered an asset.
