What can I expect to do in this role?:

About the role


The Law Clerk is responsible for independently completing a wide array of confidential legal and administrative duties for teams practicing various law specialties such as Employment/Advisory, Litigation (including Personal Injury) and Prosecutions.


The Law Clerk will perform a triage service, monitor caseloads to ensure critical activities are completed within statutory or contractual time limitations, prepare and assemble documents and work with a variety of databases and systems to maintain information and produce analytical reports.


On a practical level, you would:
Provide confidential legal assistance to Legal Counsel and Paralegals who are handling matters in areas such as labour and employment, human rights, litigation and prosecutions by:
Triaging incoming requests for service by identifying and reviewing pertinent information to prioritize, assign, or refer work

Gathering information from a variety of internal and external sources to identify relevant data/cases and summarize the information to support decision making by Legal Counsel

Preparing or guiding the preparation of documents as per Legal Counsel's/Paralegal's instructions, and verifying information prior to filing or execution to ensure accuracy

Assisting to arrange meetings, hearings and conferences

Serving and filing court and tribunal documents

Monitoring abeyance systems relating to hearing/appeal dates and venues


Act as a point of contact to receive and process advisory matters such as Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) correspondence relating to Notices of Appeal/requests for submissions and Powers of Attorney.

This may include, but is not limited to reviewing preliminary information, drafting correspondence, identifying, implementing or guiding next course of action

Perform a variety of advanced database and system functions within Microsoft Access and other WSIB systems to:

Enter, gather and summarize information for Legal Counsel/Paralegal to facilitate informed decision making related to matters such as volumes, financial settlements etc.

Search and extract information to identify potential trends or exceptions for further review by management or Legal Counsel

Prepare a variety of operational reports for Senior Management review and present information in specified professional formats utilizing platforms including ServiceNow and PowerBI

Manage electronic and physical records by:
Opening and maintaining files to ensure complete and up to date information

Assisting to manage the security of confidential executed contracts and other material in accordance with the directive and oversee any associated databases

Collaborating with Branch peers and other WSIB areas to ensure proper storage, retention and destruction of records as per established retention schedules

Recommending enhancements to systems/processes to improve the efficiency by which information is stored and retrieved.
