Major Responsibilities:


  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and semiannual inspection, testing and maintenance on fire alarm systems, wet, dry, preaction and deluge sprinkler systems, emergency lighting, fire pumps, fire hoses, standpipe systems clean agents, fire extinguishers, private hydrants, exit and egress equipment and other fire and life safety equipment and infrastructure as required by the Ontario Fire Code at lowrise buildings that contain offices, day cares, shelters, long term care facilities, industrial facilities, and parks, pools, yards, utility facilities, including water and waste water facilities in both indoor and outdoor locations with simple systems.
  • Identifies and reports deficiencies and code violations noted during inspection, testing and maintenance activities.
  • Conducts repairs and alterations of fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, standpipes, clean agent systems and other fixed fire protection systems.
  • Conducts component replacement, such as pull stations, smoke and heat detectors on fire alarm systems, gauges on fire sprinkler systems and standpipe risers, fire extinguishers and clean agent systems, emergency lighting and other fire protection systems.
  • Makes recommendations on the designs of various systems (e.g. fire alarm systems, fire sprinkler systems, clean agent systems).
  • Documents results of inspections. Identifies problems and escalates as necessary.
  • Prepares and maintains reports and inspection records on fire and life safety equipment and systems.
  • Conducts small system component repairs, replacements or alternations.
  • Travels to properties and accessing equipment located throughout the entire building and site, which may include using ladders, lifts and platforms, entering confined spaces, working in mechanical, electrical and service rooms and other building spaces
  • Notifies building operations staff, building tenants/occupants and Toronto Fire Communications when shutdown of Fire Protection systems are required to facilitate repairs and/or replacement
  • Arranges for repairs and/or alterations of the systems in conjunction with the Senior Fire Technicians and Supervisor.
  • Uses the Building Reports Canada or other Fire and Life Safety software systems in conjunction with the work order management system or other approved centralized inspection program to conduct all scheduled inspections and to track deficiency work.
  • Maintains records of all tests and corrective actions, as required.
  • Provides instruction to Building Maintenance on fire and life safety systems and operations.
  • Coordinates repairs between contractor, building occupants and tenants. Engages contractor, arranges for repairs to rectify hazards and inspects completed work, completes inspection report.

Key Qualifications:


  • Post-Secondary education in Fire Protection Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be registered as a Technician with the Canadian Fire Alarm Association (CFAA).
  • Experience conducting inspection, testing and maintenance on fire and life safety systems including fire alarm (convention and addressable), fire sprinkler systems (all types),
  • Experience with industrial, commercial, residential building construction and building mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Fire Inspection software (e.g. Building Reports Canada) and work order systems.
  • Must possess a valid Province of Ontario Class G Driver's license and the ability to obtain and maintain a City Operators Permit.

You must also have:


  • Knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code (OFC), Ontario Building Code (OBC), relevant National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and other relevant legislation.
  • Experience with basic hand and power tools.
  • Must be able to read and understand blue prints, technical drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of inspection standards including documentation requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize work, while exercising sound judgement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be required to pass a Vulnerable Sector check and may be required to pass a Toronto Police Clearance.
