- Evaluate risk accurately up to an approval limit of $2,000,000 - $3,000,000 for individual life and $1,000,000 for critical illness policies
- Make sound risk decisions and offer support to the Sales & Marketing and Retail business line teams
- Analyze financial and medical data to assess mortality and financial risk for individual life insurance applications
- Assist the Sales team in managing distribution relationships
- Collaborate with reinsurance providers to mitigate risks exceeding the Empire Life retention limit
- Consult with Senior Underwriters, medical Directors, or the Underwriting Manager in questionable scenarios
- Participate actively in team projects and lead assigned tasks
- Coach junior and intermediate underwriters from a technical standpoint to ensure appropriate coverage decisions are made promptly and communicated effectively
- Must be bilingual in English and French
- Minimum of 4 years experience in individual underwriting, with at least three years at an intermediate level
- Experience in coaching and mentoring others
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, emails, internet, and database software
- Thorough understanding of medical and financial terminology
- Solid analytical and problemsolving skills
- Ability to make decisive decisions and exhibit consistently good judgment
- Strong coaching, mentoring, and organizational skills
- Clear written and verbal communication abilities
- Capability to work with decision methodologies
- Completion of a university degree in life sciences, nursing, or kinesiology
- FLMI certification with underwriting specialization is advantageous
- Working towards FALU certification is a plus
- Language proficiency in English is required for roles open to applicants across Canada
- Knowledge of individual life and health underwriting as well as advanced financial underwriting are beneficial
