Operating within Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI), the Environmental Services Branch (ESB) is responsible for ensuring that MTI integrates environmental stewardship into all activities and that all operations and projects comply with provincial and federal environmental legislation.

The Waste and Remediation section of ESB is responsible for the MTI-component of the environmental liabilities program as well as any other task associated with waste and remediation.


Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class 5 driver's licence without restrictions.
  • Must be physically capable of performing all of the required job duties (such as lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs., walking on rough terrain, sitting and standing for prolonged periods, climbing stairs and ladders, crouching, kneeling, bending, twisting, collecting samples, and wearing personal protective equipment).
  • Must be able work in all weather environments including extreme temperatures in both winter and summer, and around job site hazards including construction and intrusive investigation (drilling) equipment, roadway traffic, noise, dust, odours, biological substances, toxic chemicals, areas of potential environmental concern, hand/power tools, moving equipment, sliptripfall, carrying/twisting, working at height, insects and vegetation, and sharp objects, including working alone.
  • Must be able to travel by ground, waterways and air within Manitoba, and stay overnight as required.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • A postsecondary degree or diploma in environmental science, engineering, or other related environmental discipline. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience and knowledge in environmental site assessment.
  • Experience collecting soil, water, and building material samples, including utilizing equipment for field material screening and preparing samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills, including the ability to handle multiple priorities with competing deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work as a team and to develop and maintain solid positive working relationships with others.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical and nontechnical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Effective written communication skills.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook).

Reporting to the Waste and Remediation Supervisor or designate for the Environmental Services Branch (ESB), the Contaminated Sites Coordinator provides specialized scientific services and advice pertaining to the Department's Waste and Remediation Program in the context of The Contaminated Sites Remediation Act and The Dangerous Goods Handling and Transportation Act.

The Coordinator provides scientific support to regional and capital programs and initiatives pertaining to contaminated sites and hazardous waste. The Coordinator undertakes environmental site assessments and management of environmental liabilities associated with the Department.

The Coordinator is responsible to help deliver the program objectives, including assessment and remediation of impacted and/or contaminated sites, with direction and support from the Waste and Remediation Supervisor.
