Acadian Seaplants Limited has an immediate requirement for a
Resource Field Technician based in either NB or NS.


The Resource Field Technician will primarily be responsible for conducting marine macroalgae (seaweed) biomass surveys in the intertidal zones across New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.


Your Role:


As the Resource Field Technician, you will work in collaboration with the Resource Scientist in planning and prioritizing the biomass surveys based upon the current needs of the Resource Science group.

You will also assist in conducting field experiments on population dynamics and ecology of seaweed.

In this role, you will be expected to do data entry, to perform some basic statistical analyses, and to perform some basic GIS projects.


Additionally, you will:

  • Plan and execute multiday trips to collect survey data from across New Brunswick and Nova Scotia
  • Collect and record high quality data from field studies.
  • Provide advice on resource assessments and harvest limits to the Resource Scientist.
  • Complete other scientific field assignments as required.
  • Supervise a university level summer student each year who will assist with field surveys.
  • Support the company's vision and policies regarding Health & Safety, Corporate Culture, Environmental Management by displaying the appropriate behaviours and leadership towards meeting the company's objectives in these areas.

Requirements and Experience:


  • Minimum 35 years field experience strong commitment to working in the field is a must.
  • Experience in the intertidal marine environment is an asset.
  • B.Sc. in Marine Biology, Biology, Environmental Science (or related field).
  • Experience towing, launching and driving small boats is essential.
  • Experience in marine nearshore waters is an asset.
  • Be physically able to work extensive periods along the shore in many types of weather.
  • Be able and prepared to work flexible hours to accommodate schedules of the prevailing tides.
  • Ability to work effectively and safely with mínimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of local seaweeds and invertebrates.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license.
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to multitask.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working with GIS software would be an asset.
  • Willingness to learn and contribute in a team environment.

NOTES:
_


  • This position requires considerable travel throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and potentially some occasional travel to Maine, USA and elsewhere in the world where Acadian Seaplants operates. This position will include a significant amount of time spent in the field and travelling to conduct field work especially during the summer months.
  • Field work is dependent on periods of low tide and the weather; work will be required during inclement weather as well as during early morning and late evening tides. This position requires working some weekends and holidays, particularly during the longer daylight hours of the summer and part of the fall season. This position can be physically demanding at times; thus the ability to work and walk within the rocky intertidal zones are a must.
