The Animal Care & Control Centre houses more than 6000 animals a year and is dedicated to providing high quality care and animal welfare.

As the Kennel Care Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing the animal care operations including the husbandry, enrichment, housing and care of animals at the ACCC.

  • Lead the daytoday operations of the animal care program in collaboration with the medical team including oversight and coordination of the kennel care attendants and related duties such as: cleaning of animal housing areas, feeding, enrichment activities, training and behaviour assessments, etc
  • Supervise and coordinate staff to ensure daily routine kennel checks, feeding schedules and transfers are completed and the health and wellbeing of the animals are closely monitored
  • Manage the inventory of food, treats, toys, equipment, and cleaning supplies
  • Provide animal husbandry and care expertise and guidance for research initiatives, program planning, and communication initiatives
  • Participate in strategic and operational planning
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on improvements to the ACCC animal holding areas, equipment and procedures
  • Develop and implement animal care programs including animal behaviour modification, enrichment programs, etc
  • Build and maintain effective teams by recruiting, coaching, mentoring and advising and counseling staff to create a culture of growth and development. Participate in performance & attendance management activities of the kennel care attendants
  • Develop annual training and development plans for the Kennel Care team ensuring the completion of all mandatory and functional training. Determine and update standard operating procedures
  • Ensure Occupational Health and Safety Standards and Envisio policies and procedures are followed, implemented and enforced. Lead safety meetings, inspections and disseminate all safety related information to the team
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Minimum 2 year post secondary diploma in veterinary health or a related field
  • Certified in animal handling, training, or behaviour assessment is required
  • Certified in animal grooming is an asset
  • Minimum 3 years progressively responsible experience in animal care, husbandry, and welfare in a similar environment
  • Minimum 2 years experience and demonstrated ability to lead and supervise a diverse group of employees
  • Experienced in recruitment, hiring, training, performance management with strong change management and conflict resolution skills is required
  • Demonstrated competency developing and leading a highly effective / high performing team in a dynamic and demanding work environment
  • Effective problem solving, conflict management experience and understanding of the relevant collective agreement
  • Experience in allocating personnel and materials with proven strategies for effective resource allocation
  • Demonstrated verbal, oral and written communication skills, prioritization, time management and decision making ability
  • Experience, ability and knowledge on implementation and development of animal training, enrichment and behaviour modification programs, welfare monitoring and working safely with dangerous animals
  • Previous experience and ability to provide animal grooming is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability, and previous experience working with and handling animals in a similar environment, excellent animal handling skills is required
  • Extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, Enviso and WHMIS
  • Experience with Shelter Management software, Shelter Buddy, is considered an asset
  • Applicants may be tested
  • Valid Intermediate First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications are requirements of this position

_ 1 permanent full-time position_

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Evening and weekend availability is required

Salary Range:
$ Hourly); $77, Annual
