The Transportation Division of the Engineering and Public Works department comprises transportation planners, engineers, project managers and technicians responsible for stewarding and transforming the right-of-way to meet demands of our growing city; increasing access to mobility choices, opportunities, and services; and promoting equity, accessibility, and environmental health through our transportation investments.
POSITION FUNCTION
Manage and implement neighbourhood transportation engineering and planning programs, improvements and initiatives.
KEY DUTIES
Coordinate and direct transportation engineering and planning programs, improvements and initiatives related to traffic calming, speed limits, crosswalks, traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, traffic safety, data collection and management.
Research and prepare briefing notes, discussion documents, presentations and draft policies and standards with an ability to assess, interpret benefits and risks and make recommendations.
Represent the department in an advisory, liaison and resources capacity to consultants, advisory groups, government agencies and community representatives and respond to enquiries from the public, outside agencies and other departments in person, by phone, and in writing.
Liaise with and provide policy and technical information and advice on transportation issues to staff, consultants and outside agencies regarding traffic calming, speed limits, traffic signals, pedestrian crosswalks, street design and on-street regulations and bylaws.
Collaboration with internal and external teams and stakeholders in project planning, design, scope and quality and report regularly on project and program status, risks and mitigation strategies.
Perform related duties where required.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is generated by the departmental work program but also impacted by community issues and requests from Council and the public.
New initiatives, major projects, overall work priorities, objectives and schedules are discussed with supervisor and team manager with recommendations.

Physical Effort:
Normal.
Mental Effort:
Short periods of intense concentration while preparing and reviewing reports, presentations, issues papers and briefings plus analysing data and reviewing design drawings.
Managing and meeting multiple and competing tasks and deadlines. (often)
Visual/Auditory Effort:
Focus on detailed drawings, a variety of source data and VDT for short periods. (often)
Work Environment:
Office.
Conduct site visits. (often)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Self-organize and prioritize work.
Excel as part of a team, or independently.
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to prepare and present complex policy and technical reports.
Ability to analyse and interpret technical information, standards, policy, concepts, legislation, data and engineering drawings.
Establish and maintain strong and effective working relationships.
Working level operation of current word processing, spreadsheet and related engineering software.
Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.
Maintain accurate records.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
University Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering (4 years)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.
Experience:
4 years of related experience,
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
Work schedule:
Monday to Friday, (35 hour work week)
$50.45 per hour, Pay Grade 15
