As a Nursery and Landscape Production Leader, you will play a key role in the preservation, maintenance and growth of Edmonton's Municipal Forest.

You will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Old Man Creek Nursery. This includes managing staff, ensuring plant health and growth, and maintaining inventory levels.

The Nursery and Landscape Production Leader will prepare the annual operational work plans, update the 10 year business strategy for the Nursery portfolio and manage the labour, equipment and materials used to deliver services.


Some key responsibilities are:

  • Supervise and mentor a team of employees including an Urban Forester and a Crew Leader, Equipment Operators, Gardener, Nursery Workers and Labourers
  • Develop and implement best practices related to the Nursery Program and implement continuous improvements
  • Promote innovation within the portfolio
  • Develop and implement strategies to address emerging challenges related to climate change, pests, diseases, or other threats to tree health
  • Collaborate with external partners such as nonprofit organizations or academic institutions to advance research or innovation in urban forestry practices
  • Communicate effectively with diverse audiences about the benefits of trees for human health, environmental sustainability, and economic development
  • Develop and implement effective inventory management systems to ensure that adequate supplies of plant material are available to meet operational needs
  • Conduct regular audits of inventory levels and track usage patterns to identify opportunities for process improvements or cost savings
  • Collaborate with other departments within the City Operations branch to develop multiyear production targets that align with broader strategic goals for urban forestry
  • Assist in evaluation of contracts and provide input on recommendations for improvements
  • Works closely with Crew Leader, the Nursery Urban Forester, Supervisor of Urban Forestry and other Urban Forestry leaders to ensure that quality and quantity of trees are available for the Urban Forestry team
  • Work closely with the Supervisor of Urban Forestry to plan, deliver and monitor monthly work plans, budget and variances
  • Ensure that the operational work plan is implemented and monthly goals and targets are met
  • Enforce and ensure compliance with safety programs
  • Ensure that staff receive and complete all required training and provide recommendations and input for the training program
  • Work closely with a team of Urban Forestry leaders to ensure consistency and cohesion between all service lines and the overall Urban Forestry program
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance as required to ensure adherence to best practices in Urban Forestry
  • Respond to inquiries from the public, administration and Council in regards to the business area
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications:


  • A minimum of 5 years experience in Arboriculture and / or Horticulture with a minimum of 2 years experience supervising staff
  • Completion of a Two year Technical Diploma in Urban Forestry, Nursery Management, Horticulture, Landscaping or a related field
  • ISA Certified Arborist is an asset
  • Familiar with AINSI Standards and Arboriculture Best Management Practice
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated experience with optimization and process improvement
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures and bylaws, legislations and the collective agreements between the City of edmonton and CUPE 30 and CSU 5
  • Demonstrated experience with optimization and process improvement
  • Demonstrated computer skills including Word, Excel, Google Docs, Gmail and SAP
  • Completion of Leadership Training recognized by the City of Edmonton
  • Familiar with ANSI Standards and Arboriculture Best Management Practices
  • Strong Customer Service Skills
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
