Community Living Sarnia-Lambton (CLSL) is a charitable not-for-profit unionized organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people who have an intellectual disability.

With over 250 employees and 50 volunteers, CLSL currently provides supports and services to more than 300 participants and their families that promote individual choice and life goal achievement.

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Primary Support Counsellor with specialized expertise in supporting individuals with severe behaviors.

As a Primary Support Counsellor, you will play a crucial role in providing personalized care, implementing behavior management strategies, and promoting the overall well-being of individuals with developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors.


Skills, Abilities & Qualifications:
The SIL Primary Support Counsellor will be the lead contact person for staff and persons supported to:

  • Support Community Living Sarnia-Lambton's (CLSL) Mission, Vision and strategic directions.
  • Assign and assist staff to ensure consistent compliance and implementation of CLSL's Policies and Procedures.
  • Represent CLSL in the community in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Meet performance standards and expectations relevant to Residential Services/Supported Independent Living
Program and as amended from time to time.

  • Be responsible for the coordination, assigning, reporting and evaluation of daily operations of CLSL properties
  • Assign and assist person supported to ensure that their dignity, wellbeing, and protection from harm are met,
including their rights to physical safety and security, food, clothing, shelter, emotional security and access to health
services, and report infractions accordingly.

  • Assign and assist the persons supported to provide maximum opportunities to develop as individuals and, as
citizens, to participate effectively as members of the community.

  • Assist persons supported navigate community resources for housing, job opportunities, medical needs, financial
supports, parenting skills, health and well-being and all aspects of daily living.

  • Assign and assist staff/persons supported to ensure that the living environment is properly equipped and
maintained for the health and safety of all residents, the staff, and visitors to CLSL properties.

  • Contribute to planning processes to ensure persons supported and CLSL property issues are considered by
management.


Professional Aptitude & Abilities Required:

  • Demonstrated initiative in undertaking and ensuring the above
  • Demonstrated creative thinking, problem solving and decisionmaking skills
  • Demonstrated positive attitude towards the above, as well as being a positive ambassador of CLSL and within the
community

  • Demonstrated resilience in performing and prioritizing intense job demands
  • Demonstrated excellence in collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to work various scheduled hours and assigned duties
  • Knowledge of and/or ability to source community supports to assist persons navigate required resources
  • Knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new software quickly
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication
  • Demonstrated understanding of, adherence to and valuing of CLSL policies, procedures, performance standards
and reporting requirements


Education & Experience:

  • Minimum 2year diploma, or equivalent in Developmental or Human Services or related higher education
  • Minimum two years experience preferred in various support settings with proven ability as required to support
persons who have autism, developmental disability, dual diagnosis, physical and sensory challenges, or who are
medically fragile or technically dependent and leadership skills.

  • Current Emergency First Aid and C.P.R. certificate
  • Current C.P.I. Certification
  • Valid Driver's License and must have use of a vehicle for transport of individuals as necessary
  • A Driver's Abstract
  • A valid Criminal Records Check
