Under the general direction of the Director Public Affairs, the Communications Coordinator assists in the development and implementation of strategic proactive communication for the Winnipeg Police Service.


This position ensures accurate, timely and consistent messaging through all internal and external communications via all communications platforms (print, online and spoken).


The Communications Coordinator works with WPS business units and other stakeholders to integrate effective communication principals and activities into all aspects of the Service, as well as major programs, projects and initiatives.

The Communications Coordinator also coordinates the internal and external Winnipeg Police Service communication content. The incumbent writes edits and publishes Winnipeg Police Service information for most WPS communication platforms.
The Communications Coordinator is responsible for the overall development of the Service's Social Media properties. It is expected that the incumbent acts independently and maintains confidentiality, diplomacy and tact regarding external and internal relations.


As a Communications Coordinator
you will:

  • Research, recommend and implement communication strategies for the Service
  • Provide internal and external Communication Services
  • Coordinate, develop and approve web communication media contents, ensuring the navigation and structure provides users and customers with access to information about the Service's programs and services
  • Provide creative guidance in the conceptualization and design of Winnipeg Police Service intra and internet sites
  • Provide communication strategies and services to operating divisions on a special project basis

Your education and qualifications include:


  • Grade 12 Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Bachelor's Degree in one of the following: Communications, Public Relations or Journalism or a Diploma in Communications, Public Relations or Journalism and related professional experience
  • Minimum 36 months progressive work experience in similar position, particularly verbal/written communication and very strong understanding of communication technology including websites and social media
  • Experience with social media and other communications platforms in a Law Enforcement environment will be an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge in Photography and video production will be an asset
  • Exceptional computer, word processing, desktop publishing and researching skills
  • Proven ability to coordinate different communication related programs and projects to ensure efficient and effective administration, organization and delivery
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately in a fastpaced environment
  • Proven attention to detail and organizational skills required
  • Exceptional written and spoken communications skills
  • Strong writer with an aptitude for grammar and style
  • Bilingual (French and English) considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to bring together Service staff members, who do not report to the Communication Coordinator, to develop information and selfservice opportunities for WPS communication platforms
  • Ability to develop and sustain positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, and accustomed to handling sensitive and confidential documents
  • Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision; innovative, creative, selfstarter, result
- oriented and motivated worker

  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive, respectful, safe and healthy work environment that supports the physical, psychological and social working relationships with members at all levels in a team environment

Minimum requirements:


  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • No involvement in any criminal activity within the last two years (including illegal drugs)
  • No criminal record for which a Pardon has not been granted

Conditions of employment:


  • Ability to pass a level 3 Winnipeg Police Service security check and maintain clearance
  • Possess and maintain a valid Class 5.0 Driver's License
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends
  • Willingness and ability to attend and successfully complete additional training as defined by the Service
  • Willingness and ability to continue educational development in web communications platforms
