About the Role:


You will contribute by:


  • Encouraging, directing, and overseeing the production and promotion of compelling online content.
  • Communicating, teaching, tracking and modeling Global News' best practices in digital journalism.
  • Mentoring newer employees in best journalism and online practices including but not limited to CP Style and Global News' Journalistic Principles and Practices.
  • Writing, posting and promoting online content, including onair appearances.
  • Championing online coverage at meetings and in the newsroom to ensure digital platforms are prioritized. Reporting on topperforming content to help inform editorial decisions for all publishing platforms.
  • Developing and executing strategies to grow and engage our audience on and social media. Monitoring realtime site performance and working with online staff to optimize output.
  • Working with managing editors, news directors and others to implement a flexible workflow that supports multiplatform content production.
  • Working with managing editors and administrative support staff to schedule online journalists, ensuring regionwide coverage seven days a week.
  • Maintaining regular contact with fellow Global News digital leaders and communicating key changes and improvements to staff and managers.
  • Participating in planning of special news, community and marketing events and projects. Supporting marketing with online and social efforts, as required.
  • Ensuring all online stories are vetted for content, grammar and style. Working with managing editors to improve the team's journalism skills.
  • Ensuring local and wire content is posted and promoted in a timely fashion.
  • Overseeing access to official accounts on social networks. Ensuring optimal promotion of content.
  • Overseeing viewer relations on social media. Resolving and responding to website user complaints and feedback.
  • Supporting advertising and sponsorship efforts, as required.

Skills and experience you bring:


  • Postsecondary education in journalism, communications or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years' experience in a midsize or major market online role.
  • Experience supervising or leading a team is required.
  • Familiar with Canada Press Style guidelines.
  • Video editing experience is required.
  • Onair experience is considered an asset.
  • Comprehensive understanding and extensive experience with WordPress or additional content management systems.
  • Proficient in social media including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently, effectively, and cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • A positive, cando attitude is essential.
