Position Overview

The human resources consultant will develop, implement, and evaluate human resources and labour relations policies, programs and procedures and advise the leadership team and employees on human resource and labour relations matters.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities:


  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate human resources and labour relations strategies including policies, programs, and procedures to address the organization's human resources requirements.
  • Advise leadership team, and employees on the interpretation of human resources policies, compensation, and benefits program, as well as collective agreements.
  • Collaborate with Sherwood Park Manor on bargaining collective agreements, assist with and mediate labour disputes and grievances as well as provide advice on employee and labour relations.
  • Research and prepare occupational classifications, job descriptions, salary scales and competency appraisal measures and systems.
  • Coordinate with Management to plan and administer staffing, total compensation, training, employee assistance, employment equity and affirmative action programs including (employees with disabilities, return to work).
  • Develop a strategic plan for the ongoing hiring of all employees to ensure adequate staffing.
  • Lead the implementation of the staffing plan and all orientation and training programs for staff.
  • Coordinate employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinate the Attendance Management and Employee Assistance Program at Sherwood Park Manor.
  • Be a member of the Leadership Team, Joint Occupational Health and Safety, and other committees as assigned.
  • Research employee benefit and health and safety practices and recommend changes or modifications to existing policies.
  • Update employee records and new hire information as well as update changes to employee status.
  • Process employee inquires, gather information, and respond accordingly in a timely manner.
  • Process Management forms for travel and accommodations.
  • Anticipate and resolve litigation risks involving employees.
  • Report to senior management using HR metrics and data analysis.
  • Serve as the point of contact between union representatives and employees and management on matters related to employee relations and labour unions.
  • Assist payroll with relevant employee information ie. sick days, scheduling, leave of absences.
  • Handle grievances and violations requiring disciplinary action.
  • Assist with and help implement and update byweekly rotating schedules for all staff including holiday and summer vacation scheduling.

Skills and Knowledge:


  • Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Human Resources or related field OR,
  • Postsecondary education in Human Resources Management combined with 3+ years of related Human Resources experience.
  • CHRP designation considered an asset.
  • Must be a team player and exhibit exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to be discreet.
  • Experience in Human Resources IT systems as well as systems for applicant tracking.
  • High level of attention to detail, well organized and welldeveloped communication skills.
  • Works well under pressure and can adapt to changes quickly.
  • Familiarity and competency with Microsoft 365 Suite.
  • Committed, conscientious and demonstrates good judgement while responding to employee relations inquiries with a sense of urgency that is aligned with Sherwood's Vision, Mission, and Values.
  • Experience with unions and exposure to Collective Agreements.
  • Exposure to relevant employment legislation including the Ontario Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code and Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Must have an approachable demeanor while instilling confidence in employees seeking counselling.
