Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Director, Science Experience, the Science Communication Specialist will create a best-in-class science communication training program, combining TELUS World of Science - Edmonton's expertise with current science communication research and best practices.

Working with other TWOSE staff and its partners, the Science Communication Specialist will be responsible for the development and delivery of a new modular science communication training course.

The course will inspire participants to present science in a fun, effective, and engaging way by introducing trainees to a variety of engagement techniques, including one-on-one conversations, small group presentations, large-scale stage demonstrations, the creation and facilitation of hands-on science activities, exhibit interpretation, and more.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Science Communication Specialist will:

Create a bestinclass science communication course that engages participants in topnotch science communication training.
Create, refine, and adapt project plans for the science communication course creation and delivery.
Research and develop creative science communication techniques.
Remain current on new communication approaches and uses of technology.
Develop new delivery methods for science communication, get creative, innovate, and experiment with new techniques.
Evaluate and provide feedback on how communication techniques impact science learning, meaning making, and visitor experience.
Build capacity within the Science Centre team to provide higher calibre experiences to our guests.
Reach new audiences and expand revenue opportunities through the science communication course and assist with marketing the course to external participants and clients.
Further establish TWOSE as a leader in the field of science communication.
Partner with other science communication experts within TWOSE and externally.
Mentor TWOSE staff to enhance their facilitation of informal learning opportunities with a focus on their presentation, science knowledge, clarity, and science communication techniques.

Qualifications:

Knowledge and Abilities:

Science communication skills: a strong understanding of established science communication methods, including how to effectively convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
Presentation, public speaking, or performance skills: demonstrated ability to engage audiences in informal learning environments, utilizing various techniques such as oneonone conversations, group presentations, and interactive presentations. Excellent public speaking and presentation skills with the ability to deliver effective training sessions and engaging audiences.
Research skills: proficiency in conducting research to inform the development of creative science communication techniques and stay current on new communication approaches and technologies.
Networking: experience in networking with professionals in related industries to stay informed about advancements and trends in science communication.
Project management skills
Program development skills: experience in designing and creating training programs or courses, preferably in science communication or a related field.
Program delivery skills: expertise in facilitating courses, including adapting delivery methods to suit different audiences and mediums, such as inperson and virtual instruction.
Innovative thinker with ability to explore and implement creative approaches to science communication and experiment with new presentation and communication techniques.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with a team, including partnering with other science communication experts, both internally and externally.
