Duties and Responsibilities:

Our philosophy and approach to student conduct in residence is educational. This studentcentered approach supports residents in their learning and personal development.

Through engagement and reflection, the process provides students the opportunity to be accountable to their community and contributing to the high standards of living and expectation in residence.


Qualifications:


The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • A good understanding of the educational and student development functions of a college or university residence system and well-developed knowledge of student affairs and relevant issues such as mental health, behavioural issues, alcohol and drugs.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding of the philosophy and operations of a residence community within a university setting.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the needs of students who live in an oncampus residence community comprised largely of young adult, undergraduate students.
  • Prior experience working in an academic environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and communications (written, oral and presentation) skills and a good working knowledge of group dynamics.
  • Demonstrated experience with supervision, leadership, team management and conflict management skills.
  • Strong research, program planning, development and presentation, training and evaluation skills
  • Administrative office experience with the ability to multitask with a demanding workload and to work creatively and independently while employing good organizational skills.
  • Significant competence in the use of a computer to access files or information to complete daily work requirements, including the Carleton Banner system.
  • Sensitivity to gender, culture and diversity as key social issues within the communities is essential in developing programs and training sessions.
  • Able to exercise good judgement in setting priorities and balancing deadlines.
  • High energy and the proven ability to motivate others.

Education and Experience:


The above is normally acquired through:

  • The completion of a four year university bachelor's degree, in related areas such as Psychology, Education, Student Affairs, or equivalent.
  • Four years of recent University or college professional work experience in a position with progressive administrative responsibilities. Includes at least two years supervising staff and two years of experience working in a community environment.
  • Professional experience with managing and intervening with interpersonal conflicts of students.
