Our Team


The Health, Safety, and Risk North Atlantic Operations Team provides leadership in terms of execution of the health, safety, and operational risk management strategies for our Ontario Operations.

In doing so the team enables the operations to meet business objectives and achieve outstanding outcomes focused on prioritizing, planning, and delivering on performance improvement areas.


The Opportunity


We are currently seeking a
Health Safety Risk (HSR) Business Partner to join our North Atlantic Operations team in Sudbury.

This is a
permanent position.


As the key support of the plant manager (Risk Owner) in the area of Health, Safety and Operational Risk, the HSR Business Partner provides expertise, coaching and direction to enable line management and contractors to achieve accountability for safety, health and operational risk management in their respective areas.

The primary responsibility of the HSRBP is to provide leadership, technical support and coaching to site personnel in the implementation of the Safety, Health and Risk elements of VPS as they relate to one or more of the plants in our Ontario Operations.

The role is responsible for implementation of hazard identification and risk management processes linked to plant activities and processes, and for assurance and verification of Policies, Procedures and Work Practices in compliance with Vale standards and with Federal and Provincial regulations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the site manager and the line organization in managing operational risks, identifying, assessing, treating, preventing, and monitoring risks in an integrated manner.
  • Lead the implementation of VPS (Vale production System), Vale's system for managing, in accordance with Vale Global norms and associated international standards.
  • Lead the implementation of new systems, processes, and procedures, and provide guidance, auditing, mentoring and analysis support to the site management team in relation to their implementation, engaging and the HS support teams as needed.
  • Work closely with the plant Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees, and with Provincial and Federal regulatory agencies, to ensure compliance with regulations and effective management of risks to people.
  • Support site leadership in the development and implementation of the site emergency response plan through coordination with site personnel, with Health Safety support functions and with communitybased emergency services, including establishment and support of the site emergency response and mine rescue teams, along with associated equipment and training.
  • Support the development of sitespecific strategies and operating, considering targets and related actions to reduce risk to people, improve environmental performance, and optimize production output, quality, costs and capital expenditures.
  • Provide performance feedback to team members and coach and counsel employees on the standards of behavior.

About You

Education:


  • Undergraduate degree in engineering, applied science or a related field is required.
  • Post graduate completion of a Health and Safety program or Health and Safety certification is preferred (i.e. CRSP).

Experience:


  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an underground mining operation.

Skills:


  • Ten years' related experience with a focus on Health, Safety and Risk Management.
  • Extensive experience with safety systems and methods Bowtie analysis, RCA.
  • Experience in an industrial environment, particularly underground hard rock mining operations.
  • Experience in underground mining would be considered an asset.
  • Leadership & People Management (mentoring, leading, influencing others).
  • Strong Work & Business Management Skills (resource, planning & work prioritization management, results focused).
  • Experienced knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations, international standards, and Injury Management.
  • Good understanding of International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) guidelines on Safety and Health.
