Description

Project Details:

  • The arts and culture sector has highlighted the importance of participation, solidarity, and ecology to address global contemporary issues, namely understanding what the 'green transition' looks like in practice. Yet, lowcost, communitydriven, and easy to implement transformative practices are undervalued and underdocumented.
  • This work revolves around the formation of a Global Community of Practice (GCoP) with international partners from: Malaysia, Cyprus, Burkina Faso, France, Morocco, Mexico, Denmark, and Sweden. It brings together architects, designers, academics, researchers, cultural professionals, artists, advocacy groups, and grassroots organizations. All are convinced that community engagement, collective creativity, local/traditional and "DIY" teachings are the key to a "good enough transformation", meaning affordable, actionable, effective transformative approaches to transform their immediate environment and communities in greener ways.

This work aims to build the capacity of grassroots cultural organizations globally to prepare, implement, and monitor sustainable transformation projects through the collection, documentation, exchange, measurement, and transmission of best practices, and collectively testing solutions and replicable protocols to implement contextual small-scale, community-led transformations.

It will include exploring comparative approaches being used in local communities, traditional craftsmanship, and architectural repurposing projects.

The goal is to build a common base of existing knowledge and toolkit for the CoP, and to problematize and formulate recommendations to address the major challenges community-led cultural organizations may face to get actively involved in the green transition, serving as a resource for learning and inspiration for a wide range of stakeholders.
