    Description

    Interior Health is looking for an experienced, term specific part time (0.50 FTE) Drug Checking Technician to join our Population Health team in Kelowna, B.C.

    The term of this position is until December 31, 2024.

    Salary Range:

    Salary range for the position is $29.41 to $38.60 p/h.

    Interior Health establishes salaries within the minimum and maximum of the salary range based on consideration of the qualifications, experience of the applicant, and an internal equity review of the salaries of other employees.


    What will you work on?

    The Drug Checking Technician (Technician)under the supervision of the Lead, Drug Checking provides point of care drug checking services, analyzes and interprets results, is available for consultation and review of spectra, and provides support to the harm reduction program to prepare reports and alerts.

    The Technician provides technical expertise and advice on implementing drug checking services, facilitates training and educating for new technicians, and ensures timely consultation and other support to technicians across the Interior Health region.

    The Technician collaborates with drug checking contracts and internal and external partners to ensure services are delivered in an integrated and seamless manner and provides education and training on the use of drug checking technologies to technicians and partners within the region.


    Some Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

    1.Operates point-of-care drug checking technologies including fentanyl and benzodiazepine test strips and FTIR spectrometers as needed in the IH region with the goal of enhancing awareness of harm reduction practices.

    oCommunicates drug checking analysis results to clients at point-of-care and answer questions related to drug checking methods and outcomes.

    oFacilitates the proper onsite collection, storage, and transportation of samples for laboratory testing.

    oSupports clients by highlighting relevant harm reduction information and liaising with site staff, including informing clients and staff of relevant community services, programs, and organizations as applicable.

    2.Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship and partnership with a diverse set of partners, including site staff, health authority staff, community partners, and people who use substances to ensure drug checking services are operational and accessible and facilitates ongoing program development and improvement.

    3.Provides education and training to drug checking technicians and harm reduction service providers on the Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer and attendant software.

    Provides timely consultation and support to drug checking operators within the Interior Health region for interpreting FTIR spectrometer results using specialized knowledge and skillset.


    4.Contributes to the development of knowledge translation materials including manuals, reports, and infographics. Develops effective strategies for distribution and sharing of results.

    5.Attends regional, provincial, and national working groups on drug checking.

    6.Assists the Lead, Drug Checking with interpreting results, providing analysis for research purposes, ongoing project improvement and sending out public health alerts as needed.


    7.Follows evaluation, data collection, and device storage/transportation protocols.

    8.Analyzes aggregate point-of-care drug checking results, compiles regular reports for dissemination to key partners to inform decision making on the implementation and refining of local and provincial drug checking projects.

    9.In alignment with IH's Occupational Health & Safety Program, employees shall adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety policies and procedures at all times and attend all required training.

    Employees are responsible to report any identified hazards, unsafe conditions or incidents to the manager or supervisor immediately.

    10.Perform other related duties as assigned.
