Main Purpose and Function


VanDusen Botanical Garden and Bloedel Conservatory are two of Park Board's key destination attractions and are looking for enthusiastic, hardworking individuals to provide assistance in monitoring the gardens with sweeps, closing up buildings at the end of operational hours as well as performing a variety of labour tasks.

The role includes routine custodial and unskilled manual work of limited variety or complexity. Duties may involve regular physical effort and the work is performed according to detailed initial instructions and established schedules. The work is reviewed in terms of adherence to established procedures.

This position requires the flexibility to work throughout the week, including weekends, and may change due to operational requirements.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities


Operations Worker Is are assigned to manual work entailing considerable physical effort and agility in the safe performance of a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled jobs around our parks.

The Operations Worker I position is responsible for the following tasks:


  • Garden patrol during evenings
  • Sweeping, locking and arming buildings
  • Cleaning public and staff washrooms
  • Cleaning at the service yard and other office areas
  • Garbage and Recycling disposal (both inside and outside throughout the garden) Paper picking around the perimeter of sites
  • Assistance with snow fight as needed
  • Assisting with room set ups (tables and chairs) for rentals and events
  • Providing quality customer service to visitors
  • Cleans and disinfects animals cages, food storage areas and prepares and distributes animal feed and water (at Bloedel)
  • Other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Up to completion of high school and some related work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of safe work procedures
  • Working knowledge of the assigned site, facility or building areas.
  • Working knowledge of custodial practices for buildings and/or animal shelters. Working knowledge of the tools, material and equipment used in the work.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to courteously answer questions and deal with the public.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions, and on uneven surfaces

Drivers License and Record Checks

  • Applicable Driver's License for the Province of British Columbia
  • Copy of your threeyear ICBC Commercial Driver's Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 30 days of this posting
  • Copy of your threeyear ICBC Driver's Claims History directly from ICBC within 30 days of this posting
  • If you have less than three years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
