EIPS is recruiting a permanent full-time Journeyman Carpenter with our Facility Services department.

Facility Services is located at the EIPS Central Administration building in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the division, Central administration is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees.

The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students, and Information Technologies.

Commencing September 25, 2023

37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day)

FUNCTION AND PURPOSE


Under the supervision of the Facilities Foreman, the carpenter is responsible for the daily execution of duties as assigned by organizing, scheduling, carrying out and monitoring the completion of the work in his/her area of responsibility.

The carpenter is responsible for all aspects of the carpentry trade.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Carry out all routine in-house repairs and maintenance, preventative maintenance programs, emergency repairs, and special projects assigned to them by their direct supervisor.

Generate and maintain records of material used and ensure adequate stock is maintained.


Carry out and achieve professional results in related trades such as drywall, T-Bar ceiling, concrete, brick laying, cabinet making and millwork, insulation, glass installation, all types of floor coverings, doors, windows and hardware, and roof systems.

Perform various other tasks related to Division maintenance and repair.

Work with other Facility Services personnel, specialized trades, and contractors in the design of specialized maintenance work and projects.


Carry out assigned inspections and investigate problems, provide solutions, prepare reports, sketches, and detailed estimates; during normal daily routine identify problems and report them to the appropriate foreman.

Communicate effectively and regularly with supervisors and school administration.

Prepare and/or complete administrative documentation associated with timekeeping, work order system, and material and special equipment requests.

Carry out the duties of stand-by and after-hour call-out tradesmen.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

High School diploma

Current Alberta Journeyman Carpentry Certificate


Experience:


Minimum of one year's experience in the trade after completion of apprenticeship training preferably in maintenance in an institutional or commercial setting.

Basic knowledge of Excel would be an asset.

Additional experience in related trades is a definite asset.


Must possess a valid Alberta Driver's Licence and meet the requirements of the Elk Island Public Schools Vehicle and Equipment Operating Manual.

Equivalencies will be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTITUDES

Ability to work with little or no supervision.

Comprehensive knowledge of all building and fire codes.

Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety codes and Workers' Compensation Regulations.

Ability to prioritize, plan and schedule multiple work tasks.

Ability to supervise contractors and other staff.

Detailed knowledge of building construction and maintenance practices and procedures.

Ability to liaise with school administrative staff.

Ability to respond to and correct emergencies.

Ability to track and record work and prepare reports.

Ability to operate specialized equipment such as forklift, man lift, power auger, etc.

Knowledge to safely remove hazardous material, i.e. Asbestos (low-level concentration)
