Description

The Rehabilitation Assistant is responsible for documenting and communicating all appropriate information to the PT or OT that they are working with and with other interprofessional team members, to ensure best possible care for the patient.

The Rehab Assistant will also support with the sourcing and provision of appropriate equipment for the Geriatric population, programming, milieu management and other general duties as assigned.


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Implements, under the supervision of the PT/OT, intervention programs developed by the PT/OT utilizing a variety of service delivery models including, direct, individual and group therapy
  • Assists supervising PTs/OTs monitoring of treatment programs through regular feedback on patient progress and program implementation
  • Has knowledge of appropriate equipment and assists in provision of equipment under the supervision of the PT/OT
  • Assists patient to practice using assistive or adaptive equipment
  • Instructs and demonstrates the safe use of therapeutic equipment
  • Assists in the maintenance of equipment and supplies inventory
  • Maintains accurate and complete client records, statistics and other data as required by the program policies and procedures
  • Assists PTs/OTs with clinically based support duties
  • Participates in community and hospital committees/task groups as requested
  • Participates in the program quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist in or conducts group activity programming
  • Set up and maintain clean and safe patient treatment areas
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Responsible to recognize and report patient, staff, and environment safety issues, identify and implement preventative and corrective actions, within the scope of this role
  • Implements and models the Recovery philosophy in all aspects of care as a Recovery champion

QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Secondary School Diploma or Equivalent required
  • Completion of a recognized certificate program as a Rehabilitation Assistant, Physiotherapy Assistant Program or Occupational Therapy Assistant Program
  • Valid Certified in CPR and First Aid

KNOWLEDGE:


  • Knowledge and experience in the use of adaptive aids/equipment
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of rehabilitation and the rehabilitation process
  • Demonstrated understanding of the scope of practice of the Rehabilitation Assistant
  • An understanding of proper body mechanics and appropriate patient handling techniques
  • Ability to follow directions with regards to tasks assigned by the supervising PT or OT

SKILLS:


  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a professional multidisciplinary treatment team.
  • Computer literate and capable of coaching patients with respect to computer use
  • Ability to effectively work with a team and communicate with diverse populations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent problemsolving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:


  • Required to have two years post completion of certification course
  • Knowledge and experience in psychiatric mental health is an asset
