Job Summary:

Reporting to the Branch Head, the Supervisor supports the day to day operation of a large branch while adhering to the Library's policies and procedures in accordance with the Library's vision, mission and values.

The Supervisor leads the clerical staff team and oversees the clerical work related to the administration of the unit and participates in developing, ensuring and sharing system wide consistent practices, particularly with respect to circulation and clerical administration.

**Job Requirements: For Library Assistant VII, "successful supervisory experience" equates to 3 years of supervisory experience.


Education/Qualifications:

Completion of Twelfth Grade, supplemented by post-secondary level courses, such as supervision, business, computer and library technician courses.


Experience:

Five years of public library experience, including successful supervisory experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Thorough knowledge of nonprofessional library methods, procedures and library tools applicable to the work.
  • Ability to lead, coach and develop a clerical staff team; excellent teambuilding and leadership skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of VPL current trends and leading practices in areas of responsibility.
  • Thorough knowledge Understanding of library services, collections, technologies and resources.
  • Thorough understanding of the relationship between nonprofessional and professional tasks.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of a large group of nonprofessional subordinates.
  • Ability to participate in the planning of library programs and projects.
  • Ability to participate in the recruitment and selection of clerical staff, and to train and develop them.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of nonprofessional library duties independently and to plan, initiate and monitor work schedules with mínimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the staff of outside agencies.
  • Ability to develop and implement new or revised work methods and procedures and to make decisions in light of established precedents.
  • Strong commitment to serving clients; open, pragmatic and responsive to clients and community.
  • Innovative and flexible in a rapidly changing library environment with the ability to assist staff to participate in and be open to change.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to actively promote the service of the branch to the patrons and work with them to meet their needs and expectations.

Tuesday to Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm; EDO on Saturday

Week 2:
Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm

Week 3:
Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm

Week 4:
Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30am - 5:00pm

Schedule - Kitsilano Branch

Week 1:
Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm

Week 2:
Monday to Thursday, 8:30am - 5:00pm, Sunday 8:30am - 5:00pm

Week 3:
Monday to Thursday, 8:30am - 5:00pm; EDO on Friday

Week 4:
Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm

Schedule - Oakridge Branch

Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm, with an alternate working day on a Sunday rather than the Friday
