Job Summary

  • Dalhousie Financial Services strives to provide the highest quality financial services and information to ensure the effective stewardship of university assets to the benefit of students and scholarly activities. Financial Services is a core service unit of the university, providing services in areas of financial accounting, budgeting, procurement, cash management, financial systems and policies, and the University's endowment, pension and shortterm investment programs and payroll services. Reporting to the Senior Payroll Analyst, the Payroll Assistant will perform a variety of specialized clerical duties utilizing an indepth knowledge of University policies and procedures, labour standards, Service Canada and Canada Revenue Agency regulations, Collective Agreements, etc.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review information received on payroll forms for accuracy including: correct salaries, hourly rates, earning types, vacation allowance, contract end dates, account numbers, banking information, adhering to collective agreements and employee handbook provisions.
  • Respond to a broad range of inquiries and requests from employees, former employees, auditors, banks, government departments regarding payrollrelated matters.
  • Calculate pay adjustments for all employees including salary increases, retroactive pay, pension and benefit additions/deletions; input data.
  • Calculate miscellaneous deductions. Prepare and process remittances and associated reports.
  • Monitor, make corrections and/or changes during the payroll run which is a complex procedure involving many steps.
  • Assist with the production and distribution of T4 and T4A slips for all employees, ensuring awareness of Revenue Canada T4/T4A and nonresident T4 policy changes.

Note

The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.


Required Qualifications

  • Business/office administrative program with approximately five years' experience in an HR/Payroll function (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Completion (or willingness to complete) Canadian Payroll Association Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification.
  • Experience with integrated administrative systems (e.g., PeopleSoft,SAP).
  • Excellent communication, organizational skills and the ability to multitask in order to meet stringent deadlines.
  • Must be proficient in Excel and Word.
