About us:


The University of Toronto is undertaking an ambitious tri-campus mental health strategy to improve services for all students as they undertake their academic and research goals.

Located within the Office of Vice Provost Students, the Office of the Senior Executive Director Student Mental Health collaborates with the tri-campus health centres, faculties, divisions, and departments to optimize services, incorporate best practices and build university, hospital and community partnerships to realize an effective stepped-care approach that ensures equitable, culturally competent access to mental health services for all students.

Research, evaluation, and measurement-based care are important pillars of this strategy as is engaging and collaborating with students in the co-design of solutions and projects that respond to student feedback and priorities.


The Office of the Senior Executive Director is a new initiative of the University established in 2022 and arising from the recommendations of the Presidential and Provosital Task Force Report on Student Mental Health.

Reporting to the Senior Executive Director and Senior Research Associate, Data and Evaluation Lead of the Student Mental Health Team, the incumbent will support tri-campus evaluation and research focused on the implementation of the Stepped Care Model and other mental health initiatives that support student mental health.


Your opportunity:


The ResearchOfficer is responsible for supporting the completion of literature reviews and critical appraisal of the literature; support the operationalization of data collection tools; supports data collection; executing creative recruitment activities, such as byusing social media and other strategies are used to engage students in evaluation & research projects; maintaining data within databases; summarizing findings in the literature; performing routine analysis of data (both qualitative and quantitative) at the guidance of supervisor; scheduling and participating in team meetings, including taking minutes; and participating in the preparation of grants, presentations, reports and manuscripts.

The Research Officer administers projects on a day-to-daybasis and is responsible for maintaining communication with the study team.


The Research Officer is responsible for understanding core elements of the projects, particularly data collection, in order to proceed with meaningful analyses of thesedata.

The Research Officer is also responsible for day-to-day administrative duties pertaining to research and evaluation, such as including monitoring timelines, keeping detailed project notes and reporting weekly on progress.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Conducting systematic literature reviews
  • Formatting data collected for presentations and reports
  • Drafting summaries of research project results
  • Handling sensitive and/or confidential information
  • Updating and maintaining database records
  • Preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected
  • Implementing and executing qualitative and/or quantitative research methods
  • Proofingand posting adverts to recruit applicants

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum two years related expereice
  • Experience in both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
  • Experience in conducting literature reviews and critical appraisal of evidence
  • Demonstrated expertise in supporting research and/or evaluation projects
  • Experience in report writing
  • Strong computer skills in wordprocessing (Microsoft Office)
  • Data management and visualization using Excel and other programs (e.g., Power BI, Tableau), presentation preparation (Canvas or PowerPoint), database management software (RedCap)
  • Training and experience using quantitative data analysis software (R, Stata, SAS or SPSS)
  • Reference management (Zotero, Refworks or Endnote
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Demonstrated ability in project coordination using considerable judgment, initiative, and creativity.

Assets (Nonessential):


  • Familiarity and skill in mental health is an asset.
  • Training and experience in using qualitative data management packages (NVivo) is an asset.
