ROLE PURPOSE:


As a member of the Finance Leadership Team, the Assistant Controller will work within the corporate accounting team, and report to the Corporate Controller.

It falls to the Assistant Controller to act as a central source who understands all of the various goings-on within the various business units.

The general responsibilities will be to lead a team of professionals and oversee the company's large scale developments, providing ongoing analysis and reporting, and managing cash flows.


KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Providing leadership, developmental coaching and direction to the Accounting team
  • Be a trusted and valued business partner who will work closely with the Controller, Executive Team and department leaders to provide critical information to make decisions that will drive revenue and lower costs.
  • Implements the company's accounting and control functions.
  • Assist Controller in the safeguarding of company assets by reviewing, monitoring and implementing controls and adopting best practices across all business entities.
  • Financial Reporting (Canadian and US GAAP): Consolidations, working papers, financial statements, schedules and notes)
  • Oversee the accounting team: supervise, review and manage. Review work being passed in from the team (reconciliations, trial balance, tax, costing, reconciliations)
  • Coordinates and prepares audit requirements and analysis ensuring it is recorded in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Coordinates and prepares audit requirements and analysis for commodity tax
  • Establishes and maintains procedures ensuring intercompany accounts are balanced and reconciled on a monthly basis.
  • Take the initiative to improve in each of these areas and have a continuousimprovement mentality through specialized reports, financial statement enhancements, key metrics, etc.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Must have a strong understanding of major accounting cycles and general accepted accounting principles
  • 5 to 7 years of financial experience, with at least 5 years of management experience
  • A solid academic background and an appropriate financial designation are expected including public accounting and audit; a CA or CPA is required.
  • Familiarity with US GAAP, consolidation accounting, Sarbanes Oxley and SEC reporting requirements, and corporate financial reporting experience is desirable
  • Familiarity with Canadian taxation is required
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and proven change management experience.
  • Proven ability to attract, develop and retain superior talent
  • Selfstarter with strong problem solving and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated capability to build relationships and work effectively across all business functional areas and levels of an organization to attain goals and drive business results.
  • Selfconfident and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Welldeveloped communication abilities with strong written and presentation skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional communication skills and be able to tell the story behind the data. Not only take the time to review the report for accuracy but to determine what it says about the business using the key performance measures. Consider their work to be analysis rather than reporting.
