The Energy Manager position will have primary responsibility and accountability for:

  • Negotiation and management of electric energy supply contracts in both regulated and deregulated markets.
  • Daily coordination with the supply Chain to optimize plant operations within the energy contract structure to balance Air Products' business needs and maximize profits.
  • Provide short term power price forecasts and the possibility of interruptions on Air Products' operations.
  • Coordinate with sales, marketing, and finance to ensure the structure and management of Air Products' energy costs are competitive.
  • Risk management of Air Products' energy supply contracts.
  • Maintain knowledge of rapidly changing energy environments and alert the business to potential short and long term impacts.
  • Participation in industrial energy lobbying groups as a leader/strong influencer.
  • Interact and establish productive relationships at multiple levels of management with energy suppliers, energy marketers, public utilities, municipal utilities, grid operators, etc.
  • Assist in locating new Air Products' plants to optimize power supply costs.
  • Assist in the physical interconnection of new power supply while minimizing capital costs and maintaining high reliability.
  • Respond to ad hoc requests for power information and analysis.
  • Work with the local distribution companies to resolve and improve power reliability issues.
  • Selecting/managing outside consultants/legal support for purposes of energy purchases and regulatory intervention.
  • Conducting RFPs, evaluating the results, and recommending the best evaluated provider.
  • Leading the negotiation of the necessary power supply contracts with the selected supplier.

Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Energy, Engineering, Economics, Finance, Business
  • 5 years minimum experience in electric energy markets, preferably on the buy side
  • Demonstrated strong analysis skills
  • Demonstrated strong negotiating skills
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills (both internally and externally with both varying management levels)
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a challenging and changing environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work internally as a team member and externally with peers in industry groups
  • Demonstrated knowledge deregulated energy markets in Ontario and Alberta
  • Capable of handling detailed and complex contract negotiations
  • Able to freely travel within North America
