Major Responsibilities:


  • Operates heavy motorized equipment requiring an AZ license in a safe and efficient manner to maintain city property and infrastructure including buildings, below ground utilities and water courses.
  • Operates powered vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, track mounted excavators, loaders and dozers, rubber tired loaders and back/loaders, graders, tandem dump trucks in combination with heavy equipment float, tractor trailers, tri axle roll off trucks, etc. Uses chains and slings to position items. Installs or assists in installing attachments.
  • Operates both rubber tired backhoes or track mounted excavators to perform both shallow and deep excavations around buried utilities including but not limited to energized high and low pressure gas mains, high and low voltage hydro lines, water and sewer pipe, cables etc.
  • May be required to interpret plans and drawings.
  • Makes minor repairs, maintenance and cleans the equipment on the job.
  • Maintains vehicles in clean and tidy condition and makes daily inspection and reports defects, etc.
  • Assists crews when heavy equipment is not in use. Assists workers in various functions e.g. loading and unloading of materials, etc. Performs other duties at this wage grade level or lower such as labouring type duties, maintenance and cleaning activities when not operating assigned vehicle or equipment.
  • Directs activities and provides work direction and training to other staff.
  • Completes and maintains reports/documentation related to assigned duties and responsibilities, utilizing various technical/computerized devices/equipment/systems, as required.
  • Assesses and determines appropriate action required to correct or deal with assigned activity related to landfill gas and leachate infrastructures.
  • Prepares jobsite, takes all safety precautions, prepares traffic control plans, erects traffic barricades, and signs. Installs trench shoring etc. as required.
  • Ensures the work is performed in compliance with all relevant legislation.
  • Performs work in a safe, efficient and courteous manner.

Key Qualifications:


  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class "A Driver's License (with "Z" endorsement) and must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits and requirements.
  • Must have a Secondary School diploma or approved equivalent.
  • Experience in the operation of heavy construction/utility equipment such as frontend loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, graders, heavy trucks, tractor trailers, etc. generally as outlined in the responsibilities.
  • Experience in general maintenance and heavy construction.

You must also have:


  • Must possess and be able to maintain any valid Province of Ontario requirements to operate mechanized equipment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and to communicate effectively verbally and in writing in relation to their job duties.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions related to assigned duties.
  • Ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position.
  • Must be able to work various shifts, weekends, overtime, standby and call ins as required in accordance with Collective Agreement.
  • Must be able to report to various jobsites throughout the City.
  • Must work effectively both in a team environment and independently.
  • Ability to orient new staff on assigned vehicles/equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of Provincial Traffic Laws.
  • Knowledge and ability to perform minor repairs on equipment and to maintain equipment and/or vehicle in operation in a clean, tidy and safe condition.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties and be able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.
