UWinnipeg's English Language Program (ELP) delivers high quality programming to international and domestic students seeking to enhance their English proficiency.


The Full-Time Instructor is a full-time term position from Jan 5, 2024 to Jan 5, 2026.

Responsibilities:


  • Delivers English Language Program courses, as directed by the program Coordinators.
  • Develops course outlines for each course delivered in the first week of classes, in line with the overall goals of the program and with the needs of the students.
  • Prepares lessons, assessment tools and tasks.
  • Develops and delivers lessons in line with the overall goals of the program.
  • Grades and marks assignments and tests
  • Participates in teacherstudent events, activities, staff meetings and endofterm ceremonies.
  • Manages students and provides regular and specific feedback on their progress.
  • Maintains accurate up to date attendance record.
  • Submits final course grades by the due date.
  • Assists in organizing and delivering orientation and program information sessions for new and returning students for the startup of each program
  • Assists with student placement and placement testing, as assigned
  • Participates in appeals committees, as needed
  • Assists students in choosing courses, if needed.
  • Oversees implementation of approved class changes
  • Administers and facilitates orientations for late arriving students.
  • Monitors the overall progress of students as assigned, including but not limited to students from partnering institutions
  • Organizes and orders textbooks including instructor copies and for library
  • Maintains the textbook library with recent editions.
  • Conferences with students to resolve curriculumrelated issues (e.g. student progress in the program, attendance) when prompted by the Coordinators
  • Works with the Coordinators to resolve classroom issues
  • Recommends and develops curricular changes as requested
  • Recommends and designs customized courses for individual students in consultation with the Coordinators, as needed
  • Refers students to appropriate services for nonacademic issues (e.g. counseling services, medical services).
  • Keeps apprised of overall student needs and concerns, and advises the Coordinators and Program Director in a timely manner.
  • Maintains scheduled office hours for student and staff contact.
  • Assists in the administration of the language tests when required.
  • Provides substitution instruction, as required.
  • Mentors practicum students in the Teacher Certificate Program.
  • Mentors instructors with curriculum and lesson planning when needed. Suggests teaching materials when required.
  • Attends conferences, workshops, webinars and other PD sessions as requested by the Coordinators and shares back learnings with Coordinators such as best practices and trends in language instruction.
  • Assists curriculum development as requested.
  • Assists Coordinators in developing studentrelated policies and updates students in program accordingly
  • Monitors Nexus comments, and informs the Coordinators of comments needing follow up.
  • Keeps students apprised of attendance issues throughout the term
  • Collects and stores documentation of students' absences due to illness, family emergency, and withdrawal from the program
  • Creates final grades excel spreadsheet. Enters student final grades as requested by the Coordinators.
  • Extracts and saves final grades from Nexus.
  • Assists in creating Academic 5 reports and pass/fail letters.
  • Leads and organizes student groups, afterschool clubs or more.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Education and Qualifications:


  • Undergraduate degree required: graduate degree would be an asset.
  • TESL or CELTA required.
  • Specialized training and qualifications in TEAL (teaching English as an Additional Language) or an area of specialization in Linguistics or Education.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with a variety of testing formats such as: IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC, Duolingo.
  • Demonstrated experience in student assessment and management.

years of directly related experience in teaching a wide range of ability levels in English (beginner to advanced) and a range of specific skills (e.g.

pronunciation, listening, reading, writing).

  • Experience in student advising is required.
  • Proven capacity to work effectively in a leadership role and in teambased projects.
  • Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office, D2L Brightspace (Nexus) and Zoom.
  • Ability to learn smartboard and other technology and platforms.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs and issues of international students.
  • Demonstrated use of sound judgment in decisionmaking.
  • Evidence of a studentcentered teaching approach.
  • Demonstrated commitment to being a positive role model in developing and maintaining a respectful learning and working environment both within the classroom and in relationships with colleagues.
