This is a permanent, full-time position, working 75 hours bi-weekly.

The Yukon Geological Survey (YGS) acquires and disseminates geological and geohazard knowledge to support exploration; to inform resource and land management planning; to assist with infrastructure development; and to engage communities, schools, and the public.


Reporting to the Director, the Head, Minerals Geology is a key member of the Yukon Geological Survey branch management team and participates in the design, development, and implementation of government programs and services in support of the mineral industry, including development of policies, objectives, strategies and scientific standards related to the collection, analysis and reporting of geoscience information.

The Head of Mineral Services oversees and coordinates the activities of Minerals Geology staff, who are collectively responsible for tracking and reporting on mineral exploration and mining activities in the territory, managing the YGS' drill core program and the Yukon Mineral Exploration Program.


Note:
This is one of two YGS positions currently being advertised by the Yukon government.
The other YGS position is for an Economic Geologist with the Minerals Geology unit.

Essential Qualifications

  • MSc in geology with substantial experience in mineral exploration, or with demonstrated knowledge of mineral deposits/mineral systems;
  • Experience managing or leading components of mineral exploration projects;
  • Experience with managing large spatial datasets and using mapping (GIS) software;
  • Experience with technical writing and public speaking;
  • Experience managing personnel and budgets.

Desired Knowledge, skills and suitability

  • Interpersonal and communication skills and who will work collaboratively with staff to advance YGS priorities
  • Knowledge of the Yukon's geology and mineral occurrences
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Understanding of the role of geological surveys

  • Valid Class 5 driver's licence
