The Ministry of Transportation is seeking a passionate leader with strong technical knowledge of Civil Engineering


As the Area Manager Construction, you will direct the activities of consultants, contractors and technical supervisory staff engaged in the construction of transportation projects within the boundaries of our Northwestern Region.

What can I expect to do in this role?: Reporting to the Head of Construction Management Northwest, you will:

  • Manage a number of construction projects and contracts.
  • Direct activities of consultants, contractors and technical supervisory staff engaged in construction of highways and associated services.
  • Ensure material and staff resources are utilized efficiently.
  • Provide technical and managerial guidance and advice to resolve construction issues.
  • Represent the ministry at committee meetings, contractor meetings and consultant meetings.
  • Carry out special projects and assignments.

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • A Degree in Civil Engineering from a university of recognized standing.
  • You are a Professional Engineer, licensed with the Association of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • You hold a valid class G Driver's License or equivalent recognized in Ontario.
  • You are able and willing to travel frequently across the region, from White River to Kenora.

Strategic Leadership Skills:


  • You have proven leadership and managerial skills to effectively supervise and develop professional, technical and support staff and resolve personnel problems and staff relations issues.
  • You have demonstrated negotiation skills and can provide contracts engineering guidance to resolve disputes with consultants and contractors.
  • You have demonstrated ability to identify and provide direction in the resolution of complex and contentious issues.
  • You have a passion for developing, building and leading organizational capacity through inclusive, positive, and valuesbased leadership in areas of organizational design, recruitment, talent and performance management and labor relations matters.
  • You have the ability to be responsible for the overall compliance with legislative statutes, collective agreements, government and ministry policies, directives, guidelines and commitments related services.
  • You have sound judgement and political acuity skills to provide authoritative advice and guidance to senior management.

Technical Knowledge and Experience:


  • You have advanced knowledge of civil engineering theories, principles and practices related to construction of highway facilities.
  • You have experience in the design and construction of transportation corridors and structures.
  • You have knowledge of administrative and engineering policies, procedures and standards governing construction and contract administration.
  • You have strong analytical skills to assess recommendations for technical adequacy and consistency with government policies.
  • You have initiative, problem solving skills, and sound judgement to assess and solve complex engineering problems.

Financial and Project Management Skills:


  • You have a thorough knowledge of Ministry policies, directives and standards governing administrative and financial procedures and processes, specifically related to monitoring construction operations, expenditures and invoicing and payments.
  • You are able to work under pressure to meet deadlines and to make decisions independently with mínimal supervision.
