GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY


The Driver Examiner is responsible for examination work involving assessing applicants for driver's licences in accordance with standards established with respect to knowledge, vision, driving, and physical capabilities.

This includes testing applicants for all classes of driver's licences (i.e., Class 1 to Class 7) and endorsements (e.g., air brake, school bus, motorcycle).

The Driver Examiner is responsible for coaching, educating, and encouraging unsuccessful road test applicants based on the driving skills demonstrated during the road test to increase their chance of success on the next road test and ensure they have a positive experience, even if they were not successful.

The Driver Examiner is responsible for completing interviews, delivering Traffic Safety Education presentations, and assessing driver safety when SGI Driver Programs deems necessary.

Work is performed at large examination centres, small examination centres, or from mobile units.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Driver Examinations

  • Administers and conducts written and oral examinations, vision screening, road tests for Class 1 through 7, and endorsements (e.g., air brake, school bus, heavy trailer, motorcycle).
  • Evaluates test results and counsels applicants on areas for improvement.
  • Conducts visual inspections of vehicles used for testing for signs of safety issues.
  • Observes applicants for signs and symptoms that may indicate a medical examination is required before a licence is issued.
  • Creates routes for road testing in various locations.
  • Responds to customer concerns regarding examinations and interviews.
  • Provides input into ministerial inquiries.
Driver Safety- Conducts investigations and interviews in connection with various programs (e.g., Driver Improvement Program, Graduated Driver's Licence, Fraud ID), makes recommendations, and prepares reports. Creates customized Driver Ability Assessments (DAAs) for individuals based on their reported medical conditions.

The customized DAA exposes the applicant to driving activities that are not standard road-testing criteria and allows the relevant criteria to be evaluated.

Prepares reports based on DAA results. Delivers traffic safety presentations to large groups (e.g., Traffic Safety Education, Safety Talks in high school driver education classes). Answers routine inquiries and provides information to issuers, the public, and employees relating to driving inquiries, rules of the road, and interpretations. Answers public inquiries regarding driver licensing and driver examinations, either verbally or in writing.
Partner Relationship- Collaborates with external partners and organizations on various programs for driver examination services. Answers inquiries from the public, enforcement agencies, legal professionals, court officials, and other outside agencies regarding driver licensing and Class 1-4 driver training programs or instruction.
Branch Operations Support- Manages fleet vehicles for location. Advises on the space, supply, and equipment requirements of the examination center. Recommends whether satellite locations adequately meet business and customer needs.

Proficient knowledge of written and oral examinations; sign, vision, and road tests; and endorsements for all classes of drivers' licences.
