    Availability:

    Please ensure you indicate your availability in your application. JIS supports participants at programs that are offered 7 days a week. Shifts are typically between 1-4 hours.

    Job Description

    POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Program Supervisor Children, Youth & Junior Inclusion Services, provides appropriate assistance and support to participants with disabilities, who are participating in the Division's Children and Youth programming. Assists in fostering an atmosphere of independence, confidence, and mutual support for children and youth as they participate in the programs.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts home/site visits with the Junior Inclusion Services Program Coordinator, participants, and family members. Assists in assessing participant needs, meets the participant, completes paperwork and makes any program/support plans.
  • Works in cooperation with the program Leaders to provide activities and leadership for all the children in the group.
  • Creates opportunities for group development and interaction amongst all members of the group.
  • Assists the child to enjoy and participate in the activities of the group to his/her full potential.
  • Provides direct support as required (i.e. lifting, transfers, toileting, etc.)
  • Meets with Program Coordinator and the Program Leaders to ensure that the program meets the needs of the participant meets the needs of the participant and is accessible.
  • Has regular contact with the parent/guardian to discuss the program and the child's participation.
  • Attends all training and staff meetings as scheduled by the Program Coordinator.
  • Attends all programming that participants are attending including offsite events, sleep outs etc.
  • Maintains and creates ongoing records as indicated by the Program Coordinator.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education/Experience

  • Completion of grade 10
  • Demonstrated involvement in Recreation & Culture Division and / or children's programs and/or related volunteer experience
  • Experience working with children with disabilities in an integrated setting
  • Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to facilitate inclusion of children with disabilities into a recreation program
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Self-starter with proven organizational skills
  • Independent judgment when dealing with confidential or sensitive issues
  • Positive role model for children
  • Responsibility, enthusiasm, creativity, imitative, motivation, willingness to learn, personable
  • Ability to lead in a diverse and dynamic environment
  • Understanding of, and belief in, the concept of inclusion as it relates to children with disabilities in Recreation & Culture programs and an ability to clearly communicate this concept
  • Enthusiasm for recreation
  • Assets:

  • Bronze Cross
  • Understanding of the principles of healthy child development
  • Experience working with children with disabilities
  • TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Available for the complete length of the seasonal program (September – June, and June - August)
  • Will be required to work irregular hours and weekends
  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Will be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
  • Must have completed, or be eligible to complete HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Childhood Development course
  • Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)( if age 18+)
  • Must have a standard first aid with CPR C certification
  • Three references required for ages under 18
