Under the direction of the Academic Manager, Community Partnerships and Learning, the incumbent performs duties associated with the academic and service operation of programs, courses and workshops delivered through access strategies including City School and the School College Work Initiative (SCWI), Academic Upgrading, and Programs for Newcomers.

The Community Partnerships and Learning initiatives provide a diversified learning model for students who wish to begin on a postsecondary pathway.


The key responsibility of this position is to provide study skills support to students, on a one-to-one basis and through group sessions.

The Learning Support Specialist will support all Community Partnerships and Learning students to reach their full potential as they prepare for future studies at the postsecondary level or seek employment.

Basic understanding of adult learning theory and postsecondary pathways, coupled with sensitivity to individual student circumstances is integral to this role.


What you'll be doing:


Assess the Learning Needs of Individual Students

  • Perform administrative tasks relating to onboarding students in a virtual environment.
  • Administer assessment tool and summarize/analyze data in order to guide student support plan.
  • Research specific types of learning styles to best support individual needs.
  • Observe students in learning situations.
  • Maintain accurate notes on student learning style, approach, comfort level with technology, and modify strategies and supports in a timely manner.
  • Monitor student progress throughout the course and evaluate learning strategies regularly to ensure student success.

Learning Support
The incumbent will ensure that all learning support interventions are timely, effective and appropriate to address individual student need:

  • Review course materials (outlines, textbooks, handouts, course information), and consult with faculty as to modifications as required.
  • Develop individual learning support solutions to support a wide range of student needs.
  • Monitor student progress, and where applicable refer student for additional support.
  • Work closely with faculty to alter basic learning materials and make recommendations for curricula changes.
  • Register Material Handling students with the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) learning management system
  • Help learners navigate MSSC modules including set up the Modules, and registering learners to challenge exams

Plan and Coordinate Events and Activities to Support Learning

Workshops to develop effective study skills, improve time management, identify valuable note taking strategies and tools.

  • Improve group work dynamics and presentation skills.
  • Deliver group and individual learning modules that encourage increased use of technology in the classroom and work environment.
  • Design strategic sessions on tackling assignments, effective exam preparation and strengthening writing skills.

Plan and Coordinate Events and Activities to Support Postsecondary Pathways

Presentations to inform financing options for postsecondary.

  • Workshops to explore postsecondary program options.
  • Presentations to explore apprenticeship pathways.
  • Presentations to inform on student services available at Mohawk College.

Reporting and Evaluation
-
Ensure all student learning support records are accurate and up-to-date.

  • Collect and maintain data on student attendance, progress and supports required.
  • Produce reports for Academic Manager, CP&L to review that highlight strategies and identify areas for development.
  • Be an effective member of the CP&L team to share results and collaborate on new departmental initiatives.
