The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR) is the lead coordinating agency in the provincial government for all emergency management activities.

EMCR works directly with local governments, Indigenous Nations, provincial ministries and agencies, federal departments, other jurisdictions, industry and volunteers in hazard mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.


The Response Information Officer is a provincial level expert in the use of online and other communications technologies to provide timely, relevant, and clear information during emergency events that pose an imminent threat to public health and safety.

The Officer is also responsible for the development and delivery of training to First Nations and Local Authorities in the operational use of public alerting, the maintenance of accurate situational awareness and associated technologies.


Job Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • A degree in a related field* plus two (2) years of related experience**; OR
  • A diploma or certificate in a related field* plus three (3) years of related experience**; OR
  • An equivalent combination of related education* and experience** may be considered.
  • Related Educational Fields Include:
  • Emergency Management
  • User-Experience Design, Computer Science or Digital Technology
  • Communications or Journalism
  • Other field directly related to the position accountabilities.
**Related Experience Is Defined As:

  • Experience in online communications, web content and information architecture development, content management systems (e.g. CMSLite, WordPress), information technologies and social media management.
Preference May Be Given To Applicants With Any Of The Following:

  • Emergency management experience responding to natural and/or human-caused hazards.
  • Experience making critical assessments and decisions under stressful conditions.
  • Experience working in an emergency operations centre or similar command and control environment.
  • Experience working with and engaging with Indigenous Nations communities and/or organizations.

Applicants Must Be Willing And Able To:

  • Be part of a 24/7 standby rotation as and when required, including on holidays, weekends, early mornings, evenings and nights.
  • Work overtime and/or be placed on standby with limited notice yearround, including on holidays, weekends, early mornings, evenings and nights.
  • Be flexible regarding changes in responsibilities, assignments, shift patterns and corporate structures.
  • Work at an EMCR office or remotely as needed to maintain EMCR operational requirements.
  • Travel throughout the province and, during emergency events, be deployed for up to 14 days to emergency operations centres, including the EMCR Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre (PECC) and Provincial Regional Emergency Operations Centres (PREOCs).

About this Position:

There are two (2) positions available.
Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
This is a temporary opportunity until March 28, 2025. This temporary opportunity may be extended or become permanent.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
