    Summary of Duties

    Assists supervisory team to direct and supervise all aquatic staff (lifeguard, instructors, team member aquatics, coaches and volunteers) at the aquatic facility. Ensure the implementation of safe, enjoyable and diversified aquatic programs as established in conjunction with the Recreation Assistant Lead, Aquatics Coordinators and Aquatics Supervisor. Demonstrating a service-minded attitude, looking forward to helping people and finding solutions to problems. Be responsible for the safe and effective operation of the day-to-day activities on the pool deck and the quality of aquatic programs.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    (These set out the principal functions of the position, and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements.)

    • Assist in supervising and participate in lifeguarding and instruction of aquatic classes ensuring progressive swimming instruction.
    • Coach and mentor staff, in accordance with policies, procedures and practices.
    • Ensure high standards of safety supervision. Report deficiencies and closures in a timely manner.
    • Makes decisions impacting public safety, including decisions on pool closures.
    • Lead by example with health and safety practices, proper rescue techniques and renders first aid/CPR where necessary.
    • Maintain effective public relations employing tactful, polite and helpful demeanor. Regularly on deck speaking to parents, guests and swimmers.
    • Operate the aquatics facility in accordance with all policies and procedures as stipulated by the City of St. Catharines, Public Health Regulation 565, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
    • Ensure all written reports and records are prepared and completed on time.
    • Conduct safety talks (Tube Talks) with all staff. Safety talks must be documented.
    • Attend all Head Lifeguard and general staff training.
    • Carry out other duties as requested.

    Position Requirements

    • National Lifeguard (valid for two (2) years from the date of issue)
    • Lifesaving Society Bronze Family Instructor (valid for two (2) years from the date of issue)
    • Standard First Aid and CPR C (valid for three (3) years from the date of issue)
    • HIGH FIVE The Principles of Healthy Childhood Development
    • Current police clearance with vulnerable sector screening valid for two (2) years from the date of issue
    • Aquatic Supervisory Training Course
    • Experience working in aquatics.
    • Service-minded approach.
    • Must be willing to work a variety of shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
    • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job (Sitting/standing for extended periods of time, climbing ladder, lifting up to 40lbs).
    • Proven completion of Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness training.
    • A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.

    Hourly Rate: $25.34

    Expected Work Location: Various City pools

    Hours of Work: Up to 24 hours per week
