Job Description:


Position Summary:


Reporting to the Manager, Professional Practice, the Clinical Preceptor will be responsible for coordinating and supporting new nurses on clinical units.

The Clinical Preceptor will assist the new nurse to develop the knowledge and skills necessary for practice within the clinical environment as a beginning level nurse.

The Clinical Preceptor will act as a professional role model for new nurses and is responsible for maintaining positive relationships with the various teams to enhance the learning experience.


Each Clinical Preceptor will be hired to support one of the following programs, providing cross-coverage to other programs as required
:_Medicine, Emergency, Women & Children's, and In-patient Surgery_.


Position Requirements:


  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to research/evidencebased practice.
  • Work collaboratively with new nurses to identify and develop learning goals specific to their needs, review expectations and required competencies in clinical areas.
  • Facilitate clinical handson experiences and other professional development activities for learners, assisting new nurses to work towards clinical unit learning objectives and competencies.
  • Support new nurses to locate required information (e.g., policies, educational resources, equipment, human resources support).
  • Liaise and consult regularly with the new nurse's assigned unit preceptor and Clinical Education Facilitator on clinical unit to enable effective integration of theory with practice and achievement of expected outcomes.
  • Act as a coach and mentor for new nurse by providing ongoing support to ensure continued professional growth.
  • Facilitates socialization of the new nurse into the team and the culture of the unit.
  • Promote a mentoring environment and conduct prebriefing and debriefing sessions with new nurses
  • Assist new nurses with their development of communication, clinical decisionmaking, problem solving, and professional skills.
  • Work alongside new nurses as they demonstrate components of their practice.
  • Respond positively and proactively to the immediate concerns and needs of the new nurse and other team members.
  • Provide regular formative and summative feedback to the new nurse, assigned preceptor, and Clinical Education Facilitator about the learner's performance.

Position Qualifications:


  • Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Baccalaureate degree in Nursing (or Diploma in Nursing with Baccalaureate degree in related health care field)
  • Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.)

program, Level II:
Basic Rescuer certification

  • Minimum 35 years' recent experience in the relevant clinical area, with current acute care experience
  • Excellent clinical skills and competencies that are transferrable across their program
  • Knowledge of principles of adult learning through formal education on precepting and teaching
  • Recent experience in clinical education/ teaching of nursing students, or other relevant teaching experience (within 3 years)
  • Knowledge of CMH policies, processes, procedures, and incident reporting system
  • Proficiency with College of Nurses Standards of Practice (including entry to practice competencies)
  • Experience with clinical equipment used at CMH (e.g., infusion pumps, medication dispensing cabinets, telemetry monitors, vascular access devices, etc.)
  • Ability to give and receive timely and constructive feedback
  • Model behaviors aligned with the vision and values of Cambridge Memorial Hospital
  • Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for staff and patients

Preferred Requirements:


  • Completion of additional courses/certifications (e.g., Emergency Nursing, Critical Care, Education, )
  • Master's degree in Nursing or related health care field, or evidence of working towards
