About the position:


The Manager, Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), provides oversight and guidance for SD36 food services, including operation of the School Meal Program (SMP) serving approximately 2,800 meals daily with the objective of ensuring that at risk students have sufficient nutrition to fully participate in daily learning activities.


Depending on the operational capabilities of our schools, the SMP offers a variety of Lunch and Breakfast Program options including on-site food preparation or meals prepared and delivered by an external caterer.

FNS also oversees contracted cafeteria operations at 10 sites and manages commercial equipment for Teaching Kitchen classrooms and canteens at 21 schools.

Department budgets exceed $2.5 million annually.


Reporting to the Associate Director, Supply Management, this fast paced and complex role supports the district in the development of policies, regulations and communications plans to ensure schools, staff, parents, and other stakeholders delivering food services within the district comply with legal and regulatory requirements as well as the BC Ministry of Education Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in BC Schools.

A very thorough and practical understanding of and experience with food safety, nutrition, food service equipment, financial management, human resource management and communications is required.


Responsibilities:


Strong analytical and organizational skills to develop, oversee, maintain, and adapt, as necessary, food service operations in accordance with the Food Safety Act, the Public Health Act, Food Premises Regulation, Fraser Health Food Safety, WorkSafeBC and any other applicable laws or regulations.


Recruits, trains, schedules, manages, and evaluates approximately 40 unionized staff including School Meal Program Aides, Culinary Assistants, Food Service Supervisors, and clerical staff.


Plans and analyses menus to ensure that provincial nutrition standards are met and, where necessary, adapts menus and services for children with special nutritional needs including food allergies and religious restrictions.


Determines scope of work, operational standards, food suppliers, implementation plans and ongoing management requirements for contracted services including the SMP caterer and cafeteria operators.

Specification, selection, maintenance, repair, replacement, and disposal of equipment for all food service operations including domestic and commercial appliances.

Liaises with Capital Planning Office and District Facilities Management, as required, to ensure all equipment installations are compliant with municipal building codes and SD36 policies/standards.

Management of Bullfrog software program providing point-of-safe management for Teaching Kitchens, the SMP daily ordering, and required reporting.


Qualifications:


Bachelor's degree in Food and Nutrition, Home Economics, Food Science or Dietetics, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, as well as at least 5-7 years experience in a unionized work environment.
