    Description

    Alberta's Ethics Commissioner is an Officer of the Legislature who is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Legislative Assembly. The all-party search committee responsible for conducting this competition reports to the Legislative Assembly.

    In this role, you will work with Members of the Legislative Assembly to review and discuss private disclosure statements filed by Members, prepare public disclosure documents, investigate concerns and complaints, and provide advice and recommendations regarding Members' compliance with the legislation. In promoting the understanding of the Members' obligations under the Conflicts of Interest Act, you will provide information, facilitate individual discussions, and maintain contact with caucuses of all parties. As set out in the Conflicts of Interest Act, the Ethics Commissioner may be appointed on either a full-time or part-time basis and is currently an 80% full time equivalent. The Commissioner also carries out a similar role with designated senior officials in the Alberta Public Service.

    Under the Lobbyists Act, the Commissioner exercises responsibility over the lobbyists registration system and may delegate his powers, duties or functions under the Act.

    The demands of this position require attributes that go beyond a specific discipline or academic achievement. In addition to the knowledge, experience and skill requirements of the role, applicants will have the proven ability to apply a balanced, common-sense approach while using sound judgment and demonstrating fairness, patience and integrity. A progressive record of accomplishments, credibility in a related career, respect within the community, public service orientation and an understanding of the political context of this role are key. As this position reports to the Legislative Assembly as a whole, the individual must be nonpartisan and able to work independently.

    The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints the Ethics Commissioner on the recommendation of the Assembly for a term of five (5) years. This appointment offers a salary range of $219,386 - $294,923 per annum, as well as a comprehensive benefits package. The Office of the Ethics Commissioner is located in Edmonton.
