As an
Aquatic Biologist/Ecologist, you will join our
Guelph, Ontario office as part of our Eastern Natural Sciences team.

The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of environmental assessment, design and construction projects with responsibilities as follows:


  • Provide technical input on a variety of specialized project areas pertaining to Aquatic Ecology; this may include fish population studies, lower trophic level aquatic studies, toxicity studies, fish health studies, aquatics effects assessments supporting risk assessments, surface water quality assessments, and/or remediation techniques in aquatic habitats
  • Execute complex biological investigations and oversee field surveys
  • Complete prefield planning for projects (i.e., safety planning, mapping preparation, equipment calibration) following Matrix standards
  • Conduct background data review including agency liaison to determine Species at Risk (SAR), Serious Harm to fish and other environmental constraints
  • Support terrestrial field studies and reporting, such as tree inventories, vegetation surveys, nest sweeps and breeding bird surveys
  • Prepare and/or review technical reports, work plans and cost estimates
  • Complete prefield planning for projects (i.e., safety planning, mapping preparation, equipment calibration) following Matrix standards
  • Review background data including agency liaison to determine Species at Risk (SAR) and environmental constraints
  • Complete construction monitoring activities for natural channel and fish habitat construction
  • Support business development activities such as proposals and cost estimates
  • Complete environmental monitoring and construction monitoring programs
  • Mentor and develop junior staff members
  • Be a safety leader while completing and leading fieldwork

What We Are Looking For

  • A bachelor's or master's degree in biology, environmental science, or a related field with a focus on aquatic ecology
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in a directly related role
  • Eligible for registration on the Ministry of Transportation Registry, Appraisal, and Qualification System (RAQS) for the fisheries assessment and fisheries compliance during construction contracts specialties
  • Strong project management skills, including developing and monitoring of budgets, approved project scope and schedule, organizational skills; staff supervision and team communications
  • Technical abilities in the areas of aquatic study design, field sampling protocols, statistical analysis and report preparation and review
  • Familiarity with pertinent regulatory requirements (e.g., Federal _Fisheries Act_) and processes
  • Experience scoping, completing and participating in the regulatory review process for large multidisciplinary environmental assessments
