Major Duties:


Plan, organize, direct, and control the activities of a group of mechanical designers within the mechanical engineering department using specialized knowledge of general design engineering principles and knowledge in custom Industrial Automation and Nuclear related tooling to design the system solutions that meet the customer's requirements.


Specific Responsibilities:


  • Assess workload, update, and forecast labor loading, assign staff to engineering projects and oversee the completion of drawings according to specific deadlines and project schedules.
  • Review project schedules and ensure detailed design plans match schedule and budget requirements on a timely basis to ensure the mechanical automation engineering portion of projects are completed on time and take corrective action, coordinating with other departments as required.
  • Provide engineering expertise for projects progressing through the manufacturing and system installation stages to overcome and correct problems and technical difficulties.
  • Conduct/oversee employee performance evaluations recommend salary adjustments, and initiate personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, discharges, and disciplinary measures for staff reporting to him/her
  • Encourage and mentor direct employees to ensure that departmental morale and efficiency are maintained at the highest level. Conduct regular 1:1 with Group leads and direct reports
  • Support employee training by analyzing needs on an annual basis using the training matrix
  • Based on business goals and annual growth, establish resource requirements skills and organizational needs that will sustain adequate capacity and leadership within the department.
  • Measure departmental KPI results and rework and develop improvement plans where required.
  • Set objectives on a yearly basis that align with business unit objectives and track progress throughout the year on those objectives.
  • Provide engineering expertise for projects progressing through the manufacturing and system installation stages to overcome and correct problems and technical difficulties.
  • Provide technical support to the Applications and Sales departments when quoting new business.
  • Support the business unit quality system by maintaining quality procedures, job descriptions, and responding to NCR's and CAR's.
  • Responsible for providing oversight and support to all design activities related to construction of CSA B51 and CSA N285.0 pressure boundary components within the ATS Certificate of Authorization.
  • Strictly follow CSA N285/NQA Quality requirements as defined within the manual and procedures.
  • Ensure that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures.
  • Manage the team within the budget parameters by forecasting, implementing and defining resource plans and alerting the Director of project variances within time frames that prevent budget overruns.
  • Support the business unit quality system by maintaining quality system procedures, conducting a departmental audit and responding to NCR's/CAR's.
  • Execute innovative programs to meet industry demand.
  • Recommend and enforce design and engineering procedures and standard practices to comply with industry specific regulatory requirements

Qualifications:


Education:


  • A postsecondary degree in, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical Technologist or equivalent.

Experience:


  • Minimum years of experience in automated tooling and equipment design, development and testing. 2 or more years with demonstrated experience in a leadership or management role.
  • Experience in Nuclear tooling design, radiopharmaceuticals automation, structural engineering, pressure boundary design and GAMP/GMP is an asset.
