SUMMARY OF JOB:


The Echo Charge Sonographer reports directly to the Manager of Diagnostic Imaging, and utilizes specialized technology, knowledge, and skills to perform tests providing diagnostic data of the patient's cardiovascular system.

These tests are performed at the order of qualified physicians. Echocardiographic technology are fields recognized by the ARDMS and Sonography Canada. The Registered Technologist is recognized as being capable of performing examinations without direct physician supervision. The Charge Echo Sonographer has various administrative duties regarding equipment selection, implementing techniques, booking patients and scheduling.

All duties are carried out in a manner consistent with BGH's vision, mission and values, to meet the strategic and operational goals of the organization.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

***- Experience preparing preliminary worksheets and contacts referring physicians when required, according to established protocols.

  • Ability to perform all requested echo examinations as ordered by the attending physician.
  • Experience coordinating with other staff to assure appropriate patient care is provided.
  • Experience addressing problems of patient care as they arise and making decisions to appropriately resolve the problems.
  • Experience organizing daily work schedule and performing related clerical duties as required.
  • Experience participating in establishing policies and procedures: participate in ongoing continuance quality improvement.
  • Experience performing transthoracic and exercise stress echocardiogram procedures.
  • Experience performing scans on the following areas: abdomen, pelvic, breast, venous, carotids, and scrotal.
  • Ensure that examination room is properly prepared for patient examination including maintaining appropriate supplies, keeping the room tidy and organized.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to professionalism while undertaking all tasks and in all interactions with patients, clients, physicians, facility staff and the community at large.
  • Acquires quality Stress Echo and Dobutamine images according to Physician and benchmark standards.
  • Performs all related processing required for each completed study.
  • Perform procedures at the bedside if required. Perform each examination with consideration and adaptation to the patient's individual anatomy/pathology and physical status.
  • Notate the images obtained with an initial interpretation for the reporting Cardiologist. Ensure that all routines are followed and practiced as per the department Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Process and evaluate images.
  • Practice and utilize sterile technique as required. Assist in performing first aid as required.
  • Maintain adequate records as required (i.e., equipment malfunction, patient data).
  • Instruct and supervise students as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Ensure complete documentation in the registration system.
  • Maintains equipment including cleaning and disinfecting according to department procedure.
  • Identifies problems with equipment and notifies appropriate resources for diagnosis, and repair and assists with evaluation of new equipment.
  • Continually improve and expand scanning skills by a variety of means including participation in continuing education, meetings, conferences, webinars, and readings (when possible).
  • Participate in the evaluation of new products and equipment.
  • Rotate through the various work assignments and shifts as arranged by the manager or designate.
  • Perform other duties as required related to the smooth functioning of the overall department.

  • Follow all procedures as required to maintain a healthy and safe working environment as per the occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Conduct themselves in accordance with the hospital's Code of Conduct policy to ensure that patient and public trust and confidence are not compromised.

Requirements:


Education and Experience:


  • Must be registered with CMRTO
  • Postgraduate Cardiac Sonography diploma from an accredited school in Canada
  • RDCS registration in good standing with ARDMS or Sonography Canada
  • Core competencies in Echocardiography and Vascular procedures required
  • Must be proficient in adult studies and associated echo modalities
  • Minimum one year experience in Sonography
