We are looking for an
Objects Conservator


As an
Objects Conservator specializing in the treatment and care of historic and ethnological objects, you will be responsible for Care of Collections and Collections Access initiatives.

With an ethical, innovative, and flexible approach to the preservation of a dynamic National collection, you provide conservation expertise to collections, curatorial, and exhibition project teams, other staff, communities, and external parties in artifact conservation.

You contribute to projects and initiatives that further the progress of internal and external museum stakeholders.

Using research and analytical skills you create and implement individual and/or collaborative projects to support collection preservation activities and increase departmental knowledge.

You carry out preventive conservation activities including inspecting and monitoring artifacts, reviewing facility reports and exhibit plans; and you organize, instruct, and supervise the activities of personnel in the ongoing care and conservation of Museum collections and other objects in support of the various public programs and other functions of the Museum.

Minimum of three years of relevant experience in:

  • The treatment and preservation of complex objects of a wide range of material types, such as those found in the CMH collection;
  • Conducting and/or coordinating research to support the creation of unique treatment plans, and use recommendations;
  • Creating recommendations for object care and use;
  • Supporting and/or providing access to objects for consultation or use;
  • Working within interdisciplinary teams in a museum or gallery setting.
  • Relevant and recent experience in:
  • Collections care initiatives (such as collection rehousing projects, collection condition surveys, batch treatments, stabilization for large scale digital publication);
  • Preparing and delivering workshops or presentations on conservation topics relevant to the CMH collection.

Asset Experience:


  • The assessment, treatment, and handling organic materials such as those found in ethnological collections;
  • The assessment and/or treatment of modern materials such as those found in contemporary collections;
  • The supervision of contractors and/or students in the performance of treatments and other conservation activities/projects.
  • The identification and management of hazardous materials in museum collections;
  • Using XRF in a museum setting to support the treatment and care of collections.

Knowledge of:


  • Objects conservation theory, practice, and ethics;
  • Scientific theories and principles of conservation;
  • Community and artist engagement and involvement;
  • Occupational health and safety principles and practices;

Working Conditions:


  • Ability to qualify for and obtain a Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL);
  • Ability to lift up to 15 kg;
  • Ability to employ and work in personal protective equipment (PPE);
  • Ability to train and license in the use of X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF).

Professional designation(s) required:

Member of the Canadian Association of Professional Conservators is an asset (CAPC)


Compensation:
E6 ($71,173 to $88,080) (Under review)

Location:100, Laurier Street, Gatineau, Quebec and possibility of hybrid work according to the needs of the position.
