Description:
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Benefits & Pensions, the Benefits & Pensions Advisor provides a wide range of benefits, pensions, and employee-self-service (ESS) advice and support to Divisional HR Offices (DHROs), faculty, staff and retirees.
The Advisor works closely with all third party benefits and pension administrators to ensure benefits and pension programs are administered in accordance to the plan terms for the approximately 21,000 active employees and 5,500 retirees.
The responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to: responding to complex benefit and pension plan inquiries from plan members including retiree health and dental plans; advising DHROs on processes, procedures and best practices; assisting in developing and delivering training programs to DHROs on pension and benefit related matters; manages benefit coverage for all retirees and for plan members taking various leaves of absences; working closely with third party administrators in resolving data discrepancies; managing increases in coverage and claims for life insurance; managing ongoing maintenance and continuous system improvement activities, including updates to the HRIS and ESS platforms; and providing support on special projects, as needed.
The Advisor plays a key role in the Division of People Strategy, Equity and Culture and is expected to maintain a high standard of professionalism by providing quality results for all clients in accordance with service level agreements while maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of relevant University policies, collective agreements and government legislation.
The incumbent provides benefits and pensions advice and support which require knowledge of confidential information impacting staff, including retiree's for health and dental coverage, in all employee groups.
Qualifications Required:

EDUCATION:
University degree in a relevant field of study and completion of (or working towards) Certificate in Human Resource Management (CHRP), Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE:
Minimum three years' experience in benefit and pension administration preferably in an educational institution. General knowledge of Human Resources policies and procedures, and legislated benefits and pensions. Experience working in Human Resources or other service position. Familiarity with the University of Toronto would be an asset.
