Situation:

The YMCA Community Action Network is an innovative national program that engages local youth to address a community need through service projects.

Youth from the community are recruited, trained and mentored to assist them in being successful to evaluate, select, lead and deliver service initiatives in their own communities.

With guidance and support from YMCA staff, projects are developed by participants that are important and meaningful to both the local community and local youth.

Each project will develop a network of community contacts and stakeholders in order to increase the effectiveness of the project, increase opportunities for youth development, and ensure there is value to the local community.

The YMCA operates this initiative with different cohorts, starting with a cohort in the fall /winter/spring seasons and a more intensive summer program at each location.

Nature and Scope:

The Coordinator is responsible for the local delivery of this initiative in the Greater Vancouver area. They recruit interested youth in Greater Vancouver to participate in the program and support the program following a curriculum.

In particular, the Program Coordinator networks to attract a diversity of participation with a special priority for youth who are traditionally underrepresented, in particular, those who identify as Indigenous, newcomers, youth with disabilities, youth at risk, in particular those who are not employed or in educational training (NEET), LGBTQ+ youth, and those living below the low income cut-off.

Through the initiative, they assist participants in developing a service project that is meaningful to both themselves and the local community, helping to develop a culture of service in both participants and involved community stakeholders and promote active civic engagement and global citizenship.

The Program Coordinator leads the program using an experiential learning model so that participants will come to better understand and be able to clearly articulate the skills and competencies that they possess and have developed through the project, helping them to be more successful in future work and life directions.
