Accountabilities:


  • Participate in a wide range of administrative, maintenance, construction and operational activities in the wastewater section of the City Utilities Division and assist in other sections as required
  • Coordinate, oversee and/or perform:
  • Sewer odor source detection
  • Resolving sewer blockages and identification of collapsed laterals
  • Manhole inspection and rehabilitation, including infiltration repairs
  • Operation of the Sewer Flusher to perform various maintenance activities including hydro excavations
  • Performing inspections and various maintenance activities on Pumping Stations, including trouble shooting and wet well cleanouts
  • Response to pumping station issues identified through SCADA observation or alarms
  • Locates of sanitary infrastructure for internal and external agencies
  • Preventative maintenance programs
  • Leak detections and reduced pressure investigation
  • Confined Space Entries (act as competent person for confined space entries once trained)
  • Customer service support and troubleshooting in the field (i.e. Responding to concerns around wastewater and odors)
  • Documentation of daily activities in daily log, diary, Maximo and/or Inframap to ensure accurate data and records are maintained
  • Response to emergency situations (e.g. sewer main blockages, pumping station failure, etc.)
  • Repairs to all manner of wastewater collection or water distribution infrastructure as assigned
  • Various duties within the water distribution department as assigned
  • Daily circle checks on vehicles and equipment
  • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) guidelines, and maintain required documentation and record keeping
  • Communicate and cooperate effectively with others, respecting the values of the Corporation, both internally and externally
  • Participate in the onduty rotation (afterhours) for Operator in Charge (OIC) responsibilities in accordance with applicable certifications
  • May be required to act as Overall Responsible Operator (ORO) in accordable with applicable certifications and demonstrated experience and judgment, at the discretion of management
  • Provide functional and operational training as required
  • Participate in team development and implementation of operational/maintenance programs to meet divisional objectives and the needs of our customers and infrastructure
  • Participate in cross training in other areas of City Utilities and on various teams and initiatives as required
  • Perform winter operations activities and may be required to participate in the winter control
  • Other Duties as assigned

Job Requirements**:


  • Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent
  • Related municipal experience is preferred
  • One to two years of experience in a related field involving manual/physical labour and operation of power tools, vehicles and equipment
  • Valid MTO 'DZ' class driver's license in good standing with driver's abstract acceptable to the City is required to perform the job.**:
  • Walkerton Clean Water Centre (WCWC) Entry-level drinking water course would be an asset
  • Thorough working knowledge of wastewater collection/pumping station maintenance system standards specifications, equipment, materials, techniques and procedures
  • Working knowledge of clearing blocked sewer laterals and sanitary main flushing as well as manhole inspection and lateral inspection
  • Working knowledge of water mains, valves hydrants and meters (i.e. able to do valve exercising, hydrant inspection, hydrant pumping, as well as understand basic water main appurtenances) is an asset
  • Working knowledge of various pieces of Public Works equipment such as Flusher truck, loaders, dump trucks and water maintenance equipment
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, in addition to actual and potential hazards associated with water and sewer operations
  • Working knowledge of construction regulations (confined space, trenching, traffic control, etc.)
  • Capable of performing the physical demands of the position, including lifting and kneeling on a regular basis
  • Willing and able to work in an outdoor environment and actively participate in daily activities in various weather conditions
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team environment and demonstrate leadership skills
  • Motivated, hardworking and able to work with mínimal supervision
  • Available and willing to work day, evening and weekend shifts when required
  • Willingness to gain experience with computer programs such as SCADA, Inframap and Maximo
  • Employees will be responsible to ensure that their certificates and licenses are kept current
  • Ability to complete supplementary training related to the business unit as required (e.g. Confined Space Training, Health and Safety, Environmental, First Aid, Utility Equipment Operat
