What will you do:


  • Lead Underwriting Innovation and Risk Management teams.
  • Provide strong thought leadership and underwriting expertise on key strategic initiatives.
  • Continuously contribute to the development of the organization's Underwriting philosophies by monitoring emerging trends and best practices. Recommend and implement changes to underwriting philosophies, methodologies, practices, processes, and technologies.
  • Evolve and monitor performance of innovative underwriting tools and solutions to improve client experience, with appropriate risk oversight of underwriting guidelines and philosophies.
  • Champion and advocate for a positive and consistent underwriting client experience for all clients of Sun Life Canada.
  • Responsible for governance of underwriting risk management activities and compliance to the Underwriting Risk Operating Guidelines for all life and health insurance products.
  • Promote excellence and consistency in underwriting risk assessment across Sun Life Canada.
  • Develop and deliver technical content for underwriting training schools.
  • Develop and conduct underwriting reviews/audits.
  • Participate in reinsurance negotiations, drafting of treaties, coordinating reinsurance audits and ongoing communications regarding changes to underwriting policies.
  • Keep abreast of medical underwriting developments, emerging trends and industry practices.
  • Act as a senior underwriting resource for complex underwriting cases, providing deep technical expertise, consulting with Legal, Medical, Corporate and Chief Underwriter as necessary to resolve escalations.

What do you need to succeed:

  • Minimum of 15 years Life and Health Underwriting experience including 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Previous authority limit of $10,000,000 life insurance and $1,000,000 critical illness insurance with a minimum of three years of experience at that level.
  • Comprehensive understanding of risk management policies and framework.
  • Experience with multiple lines, products, and distribution channels.
  • Understanding of the financial impact of underwriting decisions to the Company.
  • Ability to engage and influence internal stakeholders and business leaders on matters pertaining to underwriting risk management, philosophies, methodologies, practices, processes, technologies, and strategy.
  • Demonstrate strategic vision, with strong influencing and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven partnership capabilities.
  • Completion of or working towards recognized professional qualifications including Fellowship, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU).
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required
    for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and Frenchspeaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada.
