Unit/Project Description:

The Forge is McMaster University's on-campus entrepreneurship initiative and Hamilton's startup incubator, located at McMaster Innovation Park. The Forge offers comprehensive support to transform business concepts into thriving ventures. Through a diverse array of programs and resources, The Forge facilitates entrepreneurial talent growth and accelerates startup development.

These include customized incubation programs with dedicated office space and cutting-edge facilities, a network of seasoned mentors offering invaluable guidance, workshops and events fostering necessary skills and connections, assistance in securing funding through grants and partnerships, and the cultivation of strong industry connections.

This dynamic range of services positions The Forge as a key player in empowering startups to overcome challenges and succeed in the competitive entrepreneurial landscape.


Job Summary:


The Manager, Business Incubator leads initiatives that nurture a community of entrepreneurs and provides them with the physical space and facilities, programs and services, funding, and professional networks that will enable their ventures to thrive.

Responsible for developing programs, services, physical space, and facilities that enable entrepreneurs to accelerate the growth of their start-up ventures.

Also develops partnerships and networks with experienced entrepreneurs, business executives, senior university administrators, government officials.


Purpose and Key Functions:


  • Manage the development of programs.
  • Analyze program operations, identify areas for process improvement and develp implementation plans.
  • Assess needs and conduct evaluations of the program through data collection, critical appraisal and statistical analysis, and the dissemination of results to stakeholders and funding agencies.
  • Manage the financial aspects of programs, including developing budgets.
  • Monitor expenditures while meeting requirements that may be defined by funding agency or program sponsor.
  • Ensure cost for program is on track and adjust budget forecasts to accommodate unforeseen expenses.
  • Develop strategies to connect students to sources of funding to support venture creation, both public and private.
  • Develop the content of documents and communications such as grant proposals and marketing materials.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate marketing plan activities for workshops, competitions, seminars, and speakers.
  • Coordinate training workshops involving participants both internal and external to the University.
  • Use print and online and social media to create promotional strategies and materials to market programs to potential community partners and students.
  • Develop, implement and oversee all aspects of competitions, workshops, seminars, and speaker series including planning and coordinating costs, logistics and resources.
  • Identify, cultivate, and maintain strategic community relationships.
  • Critically appraise and coach student startups on business and product development
  • Mentor and advise students on all aspects of new venture creation including product/technology development and business development.
  • Interact with and influence a diverse range of stakeholders: experienced entrepreneurs, business executives, senior university administrators, government officials, and students.
  • Facilitate meetings with program partners and stakeholders.
  • Write fundraising proposals, presentations, and reports.
  • Maintain and update the program's website content and contact management database.
  • Track and monitor program participation rates.
  • Speak at public events.

Supervision:


  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for shortterm staff and volunteers.
  • Provide orientation and show procedures to others.

Requirements:


  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Requires a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.

This position will focus and lead on providing hands-on mentorship and connections to accelerate the growth of start-up businesses arising from the McMaster community - students, faculty, alumni as well as the greater southwestern Ontario region.
