Job Summary:
The Communications Advisor is responsible for implementation of a comprehensive student communication plan for Ontario Tech's Student Life department to support student development and success.
Reporting to the Manager, Communications, the incumbent is responsible for coordinating, creating and producing key written and online resources for various audiences, including new and continuing students, faculty and staff, parents, employers, and other external partners.
Nature of work:
The Communications Advisor works in close collaboration with teams across the university, as well as staff and students in the units that comprise Student Life to oversee the development of high level collateral and communications to promote Student Life services, events and programming, through multiple communication channels.
Responsibilities/accountabilities:

Communication Advising
Facilitates the design and production of student communications initiatives across Student Life, meeting the needs of team members and other campus partners to ensure the cohesive branding and marketing of information about Student Life programs and services.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Overseeing the creation and production of communication plans in collaboration with the communication team and other Student Life team members
- Facilitating the development and production of communication and marketing plans for specific projects, including assessing the communication needs of the project, identifying effective communication channels, generating design ideas and facilitating production
- Advising internal partners on strategic/effective communication strategies to promote and protect the Student Life and Ontario Tech brand
- Working with other departments within the university to ensure the effective integration of information about Student Life services and programs
- Working with all university areas to ensure a cohesive universitywide communications strategy
- Developing and supporting consistent brand recognition between and among the different programs and centres
Web and Digital Support
Coordinates the development of a coherent online presence for Student Life that promotes ongoing awareness and student engagement about the full range of programs and services offered by Student Life
This includes:
- Facilitating the development and implementation of standards and protocols for communications via web and digital platforms
- Developing and maintaining the process for online content updates on Student Life websites, portals, and other sources of information
- Working with Communications and Marketing to ensure ease of access to information about Student Life programs and services on university websites and portals
- Steering the use of interactive technologies to promote student affinity with the community in accordance with student development theories
- Assisting in the creation of multimedia content, presentations, online learning activities, tutorials and videos on specific topics in collaboration with Student Life
- Ensuring that online content conforms to university style and web accessibility guidelines in accordance with the AODA standards
Coordinates the development and implementation of strategies and tools to measure, analyse and report on the effectiveness of communication initiatives for students.
This includes**:
- Assessing and providing analysis of a variety of student engagement through communication efforts
- Ensuring evaluation strategies are embedded in the communication plans of Student Life programming and initiatives
- Identifying baseline data for comparison throughout the communication assessment process
- Assisting Student Life staff with implementing planning and assessment practices related to communication
- Analysing the effectiveness of student communication strategies
- Making recommendations to improve communications based on insights, best practices, business objectives and available technology
- Implement integrations, develop processes and maintain systems to proactively target and nurture relationships with current students. This is including and not limited to software integrations, mobile app, lists, landing pages, forms, data mining, surveys, etc.
- Gathers, maintains and vets student distribution lists for applicable communications and send corresponding communications
