Description

Do you have a background in investigations along with knowledge of Ontario Court of Justice procedures? The Rental Housing Enforcement Unit, Corporate Services Branch is seeking an Investigator to conduct investigations of companies or individuals alleged to have contravened the offences sections of the Residential Tenancies Act (RTA).

What can I expect to do in this role?: In this role, you will:

  • Lead/conduct detailed and complex investigations to identify and confirm alleged violations under the RTA
  • Identify and locate witnesses and alleged offenders, and explain their rights and obligations
  • Conduct interviews for the collection of information/evidence
  • Prepare comprehensive investigative reports, evidentiary briefs/synopses, information's, summonses and, subpoenas
  • Assist in preparing and presenting evidence and providing advice on sentencing issues
  • Appear in court as an expert witness as required and attend court as an agent of the Crown to request adjournments, set trial dates, etc
  • Liaise with other provincial and federal enforcement agencies, local municipalities, Landlord & Tenant Board, courts, various police services and other investigative and regulatory bodies
  • Participate on inter/intraministry committees

How do I qualify?:


Mandatory:


  • You have a valid Ontario class "G" driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the province of Ontario.

Investigative, Analytical and Evaluative Skills:

You can:

  • Investigate complex breaches of the RTA and develop investigation strategies
  • Analyze reliability and authenticity of testimony
  • Assess relevance of a wide range of legal and financial information and records
  • Use a broad range of investigative tools and techniques

Specialized Knowledge:

You have:

  • Knowledge of investigative techniques, practices and methodologies and the rules of evidence and law
  • Knowledge of relevant laws including RTA, federal and provincial law (e.g. Evidence Acts, Provincial Offences Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act) Landlord Tenant Board (LTB) hearings and mediation processes, and relevant ministry policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of Ontario Court of Justice processes and procedures, principles of sentencing, rules of disclosure and related case law

Interpersonal, Communication and Problem-Solving Skills:

You can:

  • Intervene in situations to educate parties and encourage compliance
  • Provide interpretations and options to landlords, tenants and their representatives, senior officials of companies and corporations, law enforcement and other investigative partners
  • Prepare comprehensive investigative reports, Crown briefs, information and summonses
  • Coordinate complex and sensitive investigations
