This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

This position has an end date of August 30, 2024.


Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton and includes travel to South Campus Edmonton, Campus Saint-Jean Edmonton, Augustana Camrose, the University Botanic Garden, and other off-campus research sites.

Working for the Department/Faculty


The University of Alberta Utilities Department is responsible for providing Utility Services to the Great Campus Area as well as all off-campus University sites.


Position
The University of Alberta Utilities Department is seeking a Summer Student to support the Mechanical Utilities summer Maintenance.

The Mechanical Utilities Summer Student is responsible for the maintenance of the Utility Services Corridor as well as the campus water distribution system, storm and sanitary collection system and off-campus utility systems.

The work takes place on the University's North Campus as well as Off-Campus sites including the University's South Campus, UA Botanic Garden, Augustana Campus, Campus St.

Jean and other smaller research sites.


Duties

  • Maintains the support systems necessary for the operation of the campus services corridor (ie. lighting, air conditioning, fire extinguishers, cleaning, washing and painting of the corridor, etc.)
  • Maintains the campus domestic water distribution system as well as the campus storm and sanitary collection system
  • Performs and assists trades staff in various tasks such as plumbing, steam fitting, and gas fitting in the maintenance and repair of pipes, sewer lines, fire hydrants, valves, filters, meters, sump pumps, and low and highvoltage cables
  • Inspects and repairs manholes and sanitary sewer systems including septic tanks, holding tanks, cisterns and water well treatment systems

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum High School Diploma
  • Currently enrolled in a postsecondary education program
  • Must meet the following requirements to operate a University of Alberta vehicle and maintain Authorized Driver status:
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License (non-GDL)
  • Defensive Driver training
  • Must pass the U of A Fleet Safety Driver's Evaluation
  • Must be at least 19 years old

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience with hand tools
  • Previous knowledge of utilities safety, WHIMIS training, and First Aid is an asset
  • Ability to work in a number of different environments that are comparable to industrial process plants and municipal operations
  • Must have good communication and decisionmaking skills
